 What’s wrong with him????

Hi I have 2 dragons, a male and a female and they have been together for a long time!! My aunt gave them to me and they seemed fine!! But now the male keeps bobbing his head and jumping on the females back and biting just below her head!! What’s going on and what should I do??

O_O

They are mating...
Separate them.

Simple as that!

How old are they?

They are adults im not sure of the specific age!
Is there any chance that maybe the male wants to mate and the female doesn’t because when he does that to her she struggles to get away and he stops and starts bobbing his head at her again!!

I have no experience on breeding beardies, where is Nancy when you need her? LOL.

I can not tell you if she wants to be mated or not. But I’m sure he wants to! If they have been in the same cage for awhile, there is probably a pretty good chance she is prego already.

Get them separated ASAP! If there is a chance she is not pregnant, then that’s awesome, because it takes a lot of work, dedication and money to take care of the eggs, then the babies, and also extra attention on Mama.

if she’s with a male and he mated with her she’s most likely "gravid" (pregnant) you need to separate them and i forget in how long but you will need to supply her a dig box in a few weeks to lay her eggs in.

Hello Megan,

Yes he could hurt her if you don’t separate them. Not only physically, but he is probably stressing her big time.

Once they have mated, within 21 to 30 days she should be ready to lay eggs. If she is gravid, you will need a lay box for her to lay her eggs in. Go to the Breaded Dragon Breeding forums and read "Breeding Beardies 101" by Heartmountain. Bearded Dragons store sperm so she could lay eggs every month for a while.

If you choose to incubate the eggs, you will need an incubator. If you choose not to, you have 24 hours to dispose of them. Freezing them is the safest thing to do. At this point there is no baby in there, you are just stopping the development before it starts.

For good. Beardies should not be housed together, especially a male/female. It’s like constant rape for the female and all that egg laying will be very hard on her. She will take all the calcium from her bones for the eggs leaving her in bad condition. If they have infact mated, start giving her pure calcium every day, and the multivitiman 3 x a week. She will be constantly stressed also which may lead to a paracite "flair up" or the male may even injur her. She will need her own enclosure asap. If she is gravid, once she gets close to laying, you will see her dig and pace around constantly, so you will need a lay box for her. I used a plastic sweater box filled with dirt and playsand mix, which she layed her eggs in. You know beardies can lay eggs every month for up to a year from one mating? You need to take her out of there so at least she will be less stressed from the male....

There is no ""breeding season"" for bearded dragons. They can / will breed at any time. I usually breed mine in the winter. Yes, they are a bit more active and frisky in the Spring, but they will breed at any time of the year and can start breeding as early as 5 month old.

Is the 40 gallon a breeder tank? 36x18x18. Thats the smallest you could house an adult in....

It sounds like you don’t understand what needs to be done here.

Put your female in another cage NOW...not tomorrow or next week...now!

Go get bulbs for her...everything that "they" have together...needs to be doubled for her to live alone..where she needs to be to STAY ALIVE.

He will mate her until she dies. They don’t care. When the male becomes in heat...he will not stop.

Separate now, go get bulb and dish for food and water and whatever else you need. ASAP!

Good luck and keep them separated forever now. Don’t even let them play or see each other anymore. It will stress them out if you let them see each other. He will try to mate her if he gets near her from now on. As juvies or young beardies, they could be housed together but now they are mature and he wants her. Its instinct. Simple as that.

Let us know how it goes..and remember...separate now!!! If you don’t have another UVB its ok. As long as you go to pet store and get her heat bulb and lamp she will be ok till you order one for her(within a week it needs to be there). So no excuses...get goin! This is your beardies life we are talking about!!

Take care,
Lauren

Hey, how are the beardies doing? I hope you have seperated them.

Also, if by chance the male got her prego then you need to talk to Nancy or someone who knows how to direct you step by step.

Let us know!
