 Petstores really dont care

hi i visited a petstore here in england uk yesterday and they had 20+ baby rankin dragons in a 20gallon tank and they all had limbs missing(sum had no back feet)it had a sticker on the front of tank saying "special offer" only 70pounds sterling (roughly $140) all coz they had feet missing,my point is dont these petstores care that these poor babies are just being bread for money coz if they were being bread for love im sure the person who bread them would have made sure no got bits eaten.it really annoys me.are there stores near u who also do this.i almost brought 1 tho but my hubby said no coz it had 1 foot, well 2toes on a stump.grrr im not keen on pet stores now thats for sure.glad i got my babies private

I agree. Our latest dragon was sold to us at half price because he was "just getting to big." Turns out, he has a pretty serious vent condition that’s the equivalent of some pretty nasty human hemorrhoids. We took him back demanding that the petstore pay for a vet visit as it was under the warranty. The manager told us that we’d have to return him if we couldn’t properly care for him that night (it was already nine pm, no vet’s were open to us and they had one on call) and we wouldn’t be able to adopt him back.

Awww, it is heartbreaking :( Those poor little darlings deserve so much better....I am glad you made a report about that other place, I hope something is done about it...Maybe you should report this one as well. If they won’t give these animals the care they need and deserve, shut them all down I say!

I agree about petstores sucking. I posted a while ago about a petstore in my area with horrible conditions, amputated babies on sand, mixing species, ect. it’s aweful. Luckily in my area there is one petstore that generally does things properly.
Link
I feel lucky to have a place here where the employees seem to genuinely care about the well being of the animals, and you consistently go in there and see fat healthy animals with proper setups and all that.

 Pet stores really don’t care

i hate petstores to. I Swear i will never buy from one again! i feel so bad for them i want to just take them all and find them good proper homes. I got a beardie from a pet store and she was so sad about 6 months old and looked like 3 months old, shed only once in my care (not because of me but because parasites) i tried so hard to pull her through, she was the cutest thing ever, had the brightest yellow head, and pinkish/red lines down her body. She didnt survive her first round of medicine. :( poor baby. Her whole left side was caved in, and her eyes looked so weak. It was a few years ago. I’ve seen beardies and iguana’s and turtles in the same cage, they just make me sick! I hope to get a job at a pet store so i can at least clean 1 up!
Her name was Bambi.

(the bigger one was my male idk what i was doing when i took this picture)

Petco is alright here sometimes but I never see any veggies in there with them not even the adults had any, it really depends on who is working that day I think.

That about sums it up tpaul5 you hit the nail on the head, but that’s for pet-smart also. Wish they would STOP selling animals and just SELL supplies that would make me fill better when I had to get something from them.

 Petstores really dont care

That’s so sad. Most pet stores around here don’t know how to care for any animals properly which is sad. I went into one that had beardies in with chameleons and leopard geckos. Needless to say I made a huge deal about it and then got kicked out because I was arguing with the owner.
The same pet store sold someone an iguana and told the customer to feed it just lettuce and nothing else with no UV lighting. Thankfully they came into the store I work at and asked me a lot about iguanas and got proper lighting. I just hate to think about how many pets die needlessly because of people’s ignorance and pet stores targeting unsuspecting customers.

I rescued a little dragon that is missing all his toes from nipping and he’s perfectly healthy. He was given to me though since we couldn’t sell him at the store I work at. He was taken to the vet and everything at the company’s expense. There are some pet stores that do take care of their pets and know what they’re talking about it’s just too bad that not everyone care that much.

 Petstores really dont care

I know this post is old, but I’m just flabbergasted at what happened tonight at petco and felt the need to share.
I was there just checking out their beardies, saying hello, telling them how cute they are when I noticed how thin the smallest two were. The largest beardy was a little filthy with poo so I decided to talk to some one there. The guy I talked to was really nice, he took care of the big guy right away and he perked right up. For the two smaller ones however, keep in mind they are about the size of a pinky finger, he threw in large crickets that were all gobbled up by the bigger guys.

I wanted to shake him.

They were atleast twice the space between the little guys eyes and when I mentioned they needed smaller crickets he just said, oh they’ll get the rest. and walked away.

GAH!!

It may be an old post but I just wanted to add something. I am trying to get a job at PetCo because I have noticed that to... a lot of those things and I am trying to get into one of their stores so that I may be able to Actually HELP the animals. Like giving people the right advice and cleaning out the cages and feeding the animals and such. :) also I have seen the places where pet stores get the pets they sell.... not pretty.

I agree! Every time I go to a pet store all of their bearded dragons are far too young to be sold, and most of them have missing toes or feet. I fell so bad for them i want to take them home, but I don’t want to fund these pet stores who don’t take care of their reptiles!

I actually just finished an email reporting my local pet co, I’ve asked/told them a couple times about their skinny babies who now have tails/toes nipped off (no doubt by the six inch dragon in there) and they haven’t done anything about it. If I had the resources I would totally take all those babies home with me, but then it’s just on to a new batch of babies that they’ll "stock the shelves" with and mistreat.

I know this is an old post, but I have a NEED to share :)
Some PetSmarts aren’t too bad, for a start, but I say about 90% of all petstores are HORRIBLE!!!! The only reason I go to these petstores are because I need supplies... lol
Well, the PetSmarts and PetCos I go to dont mix species. But they do have 10 juven. babies in a 20 gal. OMG
I guess we should all make a PPAA (Patrol for PetStore Animal Abuse)! I guess were gonna blow out every petco and petsmart in the country lol

 Pet stores really don’t care

The PetSmarts I’ve been to around here tend to mix the anoles with other species of anoles, or long-tailed lizards. It’s sad to see up to 20 of them crammed in a 1-gallon tank with only a heat lamp and no UVB.

I bought a female green anole from a PetSmart a year ago, and she turned out to be loaded with pinworms. Meant the entire batch of about 20 long-tailed lizards and green anoles were infected. I told the manager of the pet store, but he didn’t seem to give a damn.

Then two days ago I visited another PetSmart because I’d heard they had green anoles. I was observing them on the glass, sexing them (stores never seem to carry females of the green anoles), when I noticed some jerky movements from the dominant of the three. I told someone who worked there that he had a calcium deficiency and that they needed a UVB light too, and she just looked like she was trying not to laugh.

Also, as far as I can tell, every pet store I’ve seen stocks fiddler crabs in tanks full of water, with no land accessible. They can survive in it, but their lifespans are shortened as a result.

The problem with buying pets that are being abused in pet stores is that the stores will just stock more of that animal. There has to be a way of going higher up the ladder to someone who actually gives a damn. Or maybe an animal rights group can be contacted.

An even bigger problem is that these aren’t just a few pet stores, but quite a lot of them. Employees aren’t required to know a thing about the animals, they’re just taught how to bag them.

Well said TwilightRealm.

I’m sure many of us here have done/said the same things. I know I have. A friend of mine called the "customer service" number at the bottom of a PetSmart receipt once and complained. The manager of the store contacted her and basically tried to pay her off with a gift card in an effort to "make everything all better." My friend still protested, argued, and refused the card, and in the end, nothing really happened. Frustrating as hell. At least she refuses to shop there anymore, and hasn’t as far as I know.
