Weird question, any help is appreciated!

I just got a bearded dragon about a month ago, and switched him to a new lighting system on Thursday. Now i have noticed that he is not as active, and he is spending time squinting/ closing his eyes. Any ideas? The tempature has gone up just a little, but that is the only change in the cage. My mother thinks that the light is too bright. the new light is the R-Zilla desert series 50, and the old light was a Zoo-med 60watt day-glo. If there is anything you need to know please ask and i will try to give you the answers.

An update: I turned the day and heat bulb off and he has stopped squinting and is sleeping at the moment. Does anyone have any ideas why this happened? Should I be worried about vision problems/ damage?

No, I do not think you will have to worry about any eye damage, but first let me say that the day glo is not a UVB, but rather just a basking bulb. The UVB you need is the ReptiSun10 Linear tube...Link At it should run the whole length of the top of the cage, and do not have it any closer than 6-8" or so, but it can be higher...

How old is your beardie?
What size enclosure is he housed in?
Do you offer supliments? If so which ones and how often?
What are the basking temps and cool side temps?
What do you feed him for greens and bugs and how often?

that i don’t know for sure, but my vet thinks he is around 1 year old.

Quote:

the cage is approxamently 10-12 gallons.

I am not offering any supplements at the moment (at the reccomendation of my vet) because he is being given a calcium supplement orally once a day, and the vet was worried that there might be problems between the meds and any supplements.

the basking side is apprx. 90-94F, the cool side is apprx. 88F. (it fluxuates because the cage is in my basement).

I feed (for bugs) crickets, and mealworms (only once or twice a week with the mealies), for greens i feed: green beans, peas, corn, carrots, broccoli, and freeze-dried dandilion leaves.

UPDATE: he is now sitting in one place with his eyes closed again.......... I will put a call in to the vet tomarrow and set up an appointment.

Ok first of all you need to get a larger tank for him asap. He cannot survive in a 10-20 gallon if he is a year old or so. The smallest tank he could be in is a 40 breeder tank (36x18x18) He will never grow properly in that small of a tank, and not only that but you will never get proper temp gradients...

His basking temps could be higher as well, like 100-110f at least.

Never feed meals, they have a hard chitin shell which beardies cannot digest, and they are high in fat and low in calcium. He should be fed bugs at least 3 x a week at a year old as well. For greens fed things like mustard greens, collard greens, dandelion greens, turnip greens, endive, escarol, and all squash is great as well...

The biggest concern right now ig getting him in a larger tank, giving him proper temps and UVB, and getting more nutritious food in him...

Hey there,
Nancy pretty much nailed it. He needs a bigger tank asap. 10-12 gallons is big enough for a crested gecko or a frog, way to small for a bearded dragon. He should be in a 55 gallon for sure.
Raise your temps, He could be having trouble digesting (especially if you’ve been giving him mealworms) to minimum of high 90’s - max of 115F. This could be the problem.

How far away is his basking spot from him in inches? It could be too bright for him if its too close. Depending on your bulb there is a specific amount of inches that should be between him and the bulb.
Do you have a UV bulb??
Good luck and keep asking questions! :]
