 Proper diet for a bd

i’m looking at getting a bd (i currently have 2 green igs), and had a few questions about feeding. the diet of greens seems to be very similar to what you should feed to igs, but i have some confusion about the live food part of the diet. the dragon that was offered to me is full grown, and i have read some information that adults should be fed pinkies instead of just crickets and other insects. the author stated that pinkies have higher nutritional values than crickets (and being an entomologist, that makes sense ... no indigestible chitin), but i am worried that this could possibly be too much protein. what do you feed you dragons? i have had some bad experiences with crickets in the past (a few bad crickets from petsmart poisoned my baby savannah monitor), but i don’t want to feed the dragon the improper diet. thanks for the help!

Pinkies should not be fed. Crickets or silkworms are the best way to go. Is the adult you are getting in good health? An adult beardie’s diet should consist of roughly 80% greens, 20% protein (live food), someone please correct me if I am wrong. Pinky mice cause a real risk of impaction for a beardie, and should not be fed. Here is a good food list for beardies:beautifuldragonsThis gives the nutritional values of all types of food. I hope I have helped you.

thanks for the link! i had come across that site when i was looking up their requirements, and it’s good to know that it’s reputable. the adult that i’m thinking of adopting appears to be in good health. she is alert, inquisitive, clean and mite-free, and is not too thin (she’s also a beautiful snow-white). i just want to make sure that i feed her the proper diet! it sounds like the website that suggested pinkies wasn’t very correct in their recommendations.

Ditto to what Reptichick said. No pinkies and mostly greens and veggies for an adult.

that site that everyone is promoting beautifuldragons.com has in its list pinkies and mealworms. I have heard all over this site about not feeding these two staples to my beardies but yet the site you all promote says to. Can someone please clear this up with experience?

It is not telling you to feed that. If you look at the chart, the items in blue are "feed rarely". Then it also gives the nutritional content in each, which in mealworms it suggests the the chitin is too hard to digest (true), and the pinky mice are too high in fat (also true). The only time that you should even consider feeding a picky mouse is after a female has laid eggs, to boost her weight, but you don’t even have to do it then, as you can just offer her more nutrituous foods like crickets.

i spoke to a vet and they said that crickets have no nutritional value and that veggies are only a part of the diet. They suggested reptilefare, it is a frozen moist food for the beardies. It gives them all the vitamins and nutrition they need.

That is interesting! Our vet recommends crickets, as long as they are gut loaded, which means that they must be fed "good stuff" eg. Cricket cubes, veggies, dry fish food, etc.... I am sure there is no nutritional value if they are not fed properly. There are alternatives as your vet suggested. Pellets and moist food. However, the problem is getting the beardies to accept them. Some have been quite successful. Others not so much. Beardies like their food alive and movin man!!! I feed Puffy and Sasha silkies and sometimes crix. Puffy prefers crix as she loves the chase!!! Joan2
