HELP!!! tip of Tail FELL OFF!!!!

http://repticzone.com/forums/BeardedDragons-General/messages/2164069.html
I posted here a few days ago about my baby beardie who’s tail looked a little weird. I’ve been trying to take really good care of it, bathing him every day, I tried the olive oil but it looked like it was getting darker so I switched back to Neosporin because I didn’t want it to get infected. Tonight right before lights out the tip fell OFF!!!!!!

He didn’t even seem to notice!!! Does it look like the rest is healthy tissue and will heal up or is his tail gonna rot off or WHAT?!? I put Neosporin on it what else should I do? Should I soak it in anything to disinfect it? I have "betadine surgical scrub" 7.5 povidone-iodine, would it be safe to put some of that in some warm water & soak it?

HELP!!! tip of Tail FELL OFF!!!!

As I posted in your other message, there verifies what I had told you. His tail was nipped and now it fell off. It’s normal for being bitten, it’s not very nice for the beardies but there’s really nothing you can do to keep it from happening. My beardie had done the same thing, it was nipped a little first and then his fell off and looked like a little stump but I wasn’t sure what had done it at first either.

Now, I watched my female beardie nip, and nip, and nip at his tail within about 30 seconds of glancing at the tank, I had to watch for a moment to make sure what was going on and as soon as I realized that it was her doing it, I separated them immediately. If you have no other beardies in with this cute little thing, then I wouldn’t be worried, it will heal back.

My beardies tail looks thick through out the tail then thins at the tail, almost like a bone but it’s not. I have still be doctoring his tail and hopefully with these two not together anymore, his tail will heal up just fine.

If your beardie starts having this happen again, I would come back and look for diseases that may be doing this but I almost guarantee you that it was bitten by a tankmate.

HELP!!! tip of Tail FELL OFF!!!!

Multi lizard > I agree with your assessment. I suspected his tail had been nipped from the beginning, but what ever happened it happened at the breeder’s before I got him. He has no tank mates now.

So you think it will heal on it’s own then? Is there something I should be doing other than putting a little Neosporin on the wound? Is there anything special to be done at bath time? THANK YOU.

There is something called "reptiaid" for beardies and it’s really good. I think it’s by ZooMed (but could be wrong)? If you have a petstore near by I’d try to find that! LIZ

hey - I just double checked for you. It is by ZooMed and it’s called Repti wound-healing Aid. It has tea tree oil and jojoba oil in it. Here’s a picture of it for you:

HELP!!! tip of Tail FELL OFF!!!!

I clicked the link for the "Repti-wound healing aid" and right on the first page was this review (I’m surprised the company posted it) :

"Product Reviews

Kathryn M from Washington says:
Because my Malaysian Box Turtle had obvious shell rot about 2 months ago, I ordered this before I went to the vet. Luckily, my vet had already given me a cleaning routine for the shell before I tried to use this stuff; today was the follow up visit, and I brought this along with several other items I had bought for him to take a look at and see what he said.

As soon as he took one look at this, his eyes became big and he asked me if I’d used this yet. I told him no, and he went on to say that Tea Tree oil is toxic to reptiles! He said that Tea Tree oil, topically and especailly internally, is dangerous to all reptiles; he’d had several people who had tried to treat their snakes and geckos with this sort of thing and a few of them had been so severely poisoned they died!

So, long story short; DO NOT USE! If a reptile specialist vet tells me not to use something toxic on my baby, I’m not using it! However, it seems fine how human use...but I might just toss this stuff.
Rating: 1 of 5 Stars! [1 of 5 Stars!] "

So, I’m not sure it’s safe?

I believe it will heal up, I don’t believe it will grow back to its normal length but I’m not sure on that. I’d have to look up if beardies grow their tail back, but yeah, if Tea tree oil is toxic, I really wouldn’t even chance it and keep to neosporin. I actually put a bandaid on the tail to keep everything out of it.

HELP!!! tip of Tail FELL OFF!!!!

Wow, I didn’t know that (Imderanged), thanks for letting us know. Actually, my old vet recommended it - and she was a herp vet. When I first got Oscar he was a rescue. His leg was bitten off, his tail was nipped up (by crickets) and he had burns on his head. Anyway, the vet recommended it and it actually worked (I don’t think he could have licked those areas). Good to know though. I’ll have to ask his new vet, or Edel or Nancy would know. I was just going by experience. Thanks again, LIZ :)

HELP!!! tip of Tail FELL OFF!!!!

Hi,

Tree tea oil can be toxic even to people, although it has some antibacterial properties.

Since the tip of the tail fell off after turning necrotic, it will not get infected now. This means that for some reason the circulation was cut off, it turns black and falls off. While it is turning black, it heals underneath.

If you feel like you have to use something on it (if in fact you do see some redness at the tip), you can use something as simple as Betadine (providone-iodine).....make sure you dilute it with water. It should have a light tea color. After applying this solution, wipe dry and apply Neosporin cream. Make sure it is the cream and not the ointment. The ointment contains oils that will seal the would and not allow it to heal.

Hope this helps,

Edel

HELP!!! tip of Tail FELL OFF!!!!

THANK YOU EDEL! It helps a lot. I actually have been soaking his tail in a Betadine water solution twice a day and then applying Neospirin, BUT I HAVE been using the ointment kind, not the cream kind! I will get the cream first thing tomorrow and switch to that right away. So far the tail seems to be healing fine, I don’t see any redness, smiley, or swelling, and he seems good otherwise, eating, pooping, basking...and it anything he is MORE active (although I think that may have more to do with him finally settling into his new home )

HELP!!! tip of Tail FELL OFF!!!!

My daughter found our adult beardie with the tip of her tail damaged. She had a 25 centimeter long tail and there was a black area on the tip of the tail. We didn’t notice it right away because that part of the tail had always been black anyway. When we looked closer, it was dead. The tissue was hard and inflexible, but it hadn’t fallen off yet. We took her to the vet and we were very lucky because it had gotten infected and she ended up having gangrene. The infection suddenly spread very quickly -- overnight. We were horrified because we took really good care of our girl. Anyhow, she had to be operated on and a large section of her tail had to be removed -- 15 centimeters :( and she was on antibiotics for over 4 months. We were so afraid that she was going to die. It looks fine but I would consider going to the vet just in case (a good reptile vet). It’s been a year now and she is doing great. She just doesn’t have that beautiful graceful tail anymore :(

Good luck!

dirtboy

HELP!!! tip of Tail FELL OFF!!!!

My ball python also has an injury, so I bought the Zoo Med repti-wound healing aid. Before I used it, I decided to look at customer reviews. That’s when I came across this question and the review that stated it was toxic. I called my local exotic vet, and she said she would not reccomend it AT ALL, because it is very toxic to reptiles. We can’t understand why it would be put in a reptile product, but I guess that’s just a good demonstration of how you can’t always trust reptile products. $12 down the drain.

Hey, sorry I did not read everything posted, but I do agree with Edel. And it may not be a tail nip at all but rather from poor circulation. This happened to one of my males also a few years ago, and all I used was Betadine solution, and Neosporin, the cream kind though, not the ointment. Your babies tail looks fine, no signs of infection. Just keep it clean and it will heal up nicely :)

Nancy
