I cannot be trusted at a reptile expo...

she twisted my arm, honest! she’s much stronger than she looks! her name is penelope. isn’t she wonderful?

look at that face!
for now she’s living in a rubbermaid pan, with one of the bug dishes for water and stewies’s old hut. the whole thing fits perfectly under the fluorescent UVB on the cage-top basking spot.

the little plate of lettuce is leaf lettuce straight out of my garden, because i’m kind of totally unprepared. but i called susan; she has a sulcata named ricochet, and she told me what penelope needs to eat, etc.

i really have to stop this, though. i have no more space; the last two vivs have gone up. i told todd (current hanging-out friend), "new rule--jesse is no longer allowed to take money to the reptile expos!"

but she’s so cute!

Awww, she’s adorable.
We have 2 of them that we got when they were that little, and they are both 7 yrs old now and over 65 pounds each, and they are not full grown yet!!! The neighbor has one that is over 90 pounds!!!!

I hope you are prepared as they get very large. They like to roam most of the day and are grazers, so I hope you have a large yard. (we have an acre to which almost half of it they roam all day)

Get a care sheet on them to make sure you feed the right stuff. (which i’m sure you’ll do)
But to much of certain things are not good for them and will start to cause pyramiding.

Ours both have completely different personalities, one will follow you all over the yard, the other one is way more independant and has an attitude. Likes to butt you with his head/shell. It’s like being butted by a 65 pound rock.

Good luck with her / him, we LOVE ours. Need any help or info, I can help you.

may, i was a little unprepared--i was thinking 45 pounds. susan’s hub put me straight. my yard is not huge, but medium-large. it’s what i have so it will work. i would love it if you would move over to the tortoise forum (so we’re not taking up designated bd space; not that i think anyone would really mind, but seeing as the tortoises do have their own space...) and tell me everything you know, because i don’t know much. i did read that they’re aggressive little buggers right out of the shell. i don’t know what she’s like yet. i picked her because the others just pulled tight into their shells and waited to be put down. she poked her little head right out and was kind of very tiny bobbing. i thought she seemed friendly and curious. i stuck her into my purse (in a deli container) to take her into the restaurant where we had lunch. i didn’t want her to roast in the car. i took some lettuce off my plate for her, and she was eating it out of my hand on the way home; didn’t seem the least bit fazed by her adventure. she ran around on my bed all evening, and when i went to bed i put her to bed. woke up to a good, healthy-looking poo in her box, so i guess, so far, so good.

she’s about 7 weeks old; i wrote to the breeder and they told me her hatch date is feb. 13 (the first reply said feb. 1, but someone came along later, i guess, and corrected it to feb 13).

i appreciate the offer, may. i was prepared in that i have reptiles already, but really didn’t know anything about tortoises. my friend susan gave me a website to read and it’s helping me a lot. lots of foods you’d think would be good for them, are actually too good for them, which actually makes sense when you consider that their bodies are made to take all the nutrition they can from lean pickings. my goal is to have her grow up perfectly smooth and round.

do you have pyramiding problems with yours? would you tell me a little about what you did and didn’t do? i’m trying to drag the tortoise people over to the tortoise forum. there are more of us than i realized.
