Mouth sore and possible cloaca infection?

Hi everyone!

I adopted a Beardie, whom I’ve named Bowser, from a local reptile pet store two weeks ago. He’s been a delight so far. He’s always perky, curious, friendly and outgoing. Last night I noticed he had a sore on his mouth, and his cloaca looks discolored and possibly a bit swollen. I called the vet’s office the minute they opened this morning, but their reptile vet is out on Thursdays, so Bowser can’t be seen until tomorrow at 2:30. In the meantime, I was hoping to get your opinions on what could be going on with him. Other than these symptoms, he’s acting 100% the same as usual, eating, pooping, and just generally being a little attention hog. To address the usual questions, his tank is kept at 85-90 degrees during the day, and 75-80 degrees at night. He’s been eating cilantro, arugula, and crickets. He has eaten one or two mealworms before I discovered that they’re bad for juvenile beardies. I have been dusting his crickets with calcium as well. If you have any insight, please share with me!

Mouth sore and possible cloaca infection?

Update: Since Bowser has no symptoms of a calcium or vitamin deficiency on his mouth, the vet thinks he somehow scratched it. As for his cloaca, he’s luckily not impacted (I didn’t really suspect impaction anyway, since he’s been very regular haha). The vet isn’t entirely sure what it could be, aside from irritation, so I have antibiotic ointment for both his mouth and his cloaca. The fecal test results should be in tomorrow to be sure that it’s not a parasite. This vet really seemed to know his stuff, so I’m happy my little guy was in such good hands!

Hi,

That looks like a prolapse on his vent. Is it just an opening or something coming out of his vent/ It’s hard to see in the picture.

His cloaca was slightly open, but there was nothing coming out of it. It’s still a little open, but looks considerably better, as does his mouth. I didn’t hear back from the vet today about his fecal exam results, so I’m hoping by Monday I will. The vet said it didn’t appear to be impaction or a prolapse, so he thinks it’s just somehow irritated.

Unfortunately, he’s taken a turn for the worse since going on Panacur for his pinworms. I’m wondering if the vet prescribed too strong of a dosage for him. He’s had less of an appetite and this morning seemed pretty lethargic. I took him to the vet first thing this morning and they asked me to drop him off there. I still haven’t heard anything back, and I’m trying hard not to freak out, but I’m just so worried about him. This has been so difficult. I’ll be heartbroken if he can’t fight it. In the short time I’ve had him, he’s been such a wonderful pet. I’ll be sure to let you know once I do hear something, and have Terris send her good vibes too. :)

So the good news is, the Panacur wiped out the pinworms! The bad news is, it was a bit much for little Bowser, and really irritated his cloaca some more and caused him to lose his appetite. I took him back to the vet this morning and they gave him an X-ray to make sure he wasn’t impacted or anything, which thankfully, he’s not. The vet told me to give him mineral oil baths twice a day and gave me a new ointment to help with his irritation. Since he hasn’t had much of an appetite the past couple of days, I’ve been giving him Reptaid, which he LOVES.

The vet also complimented Bowser’s personality! Oh and miraculously I didn’t get charged for the X-ray. Pretty sweet!

Hi,

Panacur is pretty harsh on their little bellies. Get him some acydophilus, liquid in stawberry flavor, they love it. It will help regenerate the gut flora and make his belly feel better.

Thank you, Edel! That’s a wonderful idea. I’ll search for it.
