 My first parrot!

Well...I had a cocketeil a few years ago...but not for very long.

But a couple was getting divorced and couldn’t keep the bird, so I got the bird, it’s cage, its carrying cage, and all its toys for free! Her name is Avacodo. She’s a little shy still, but she’ll take nuts and fruit out of your hand without any problem, although if you attempt to pick her up she bites. Then every now and again she’ll tilt her head a little asking to rub the back of her neck. It’s pretty cool too, because I had bought a bunch of bird books to read not that long ago and read them. (like birds for dummies and such) She has a little bit of pelleted food left, but I’m going soon to get her some new toys and some pellet food that she’ll like. (she doesn’t seem to like her current food...although she’s having no problem taking bites of apples, pecans, peanuts, and tangerines) I’m just trying to build trust now by going into talk to her and give her pieces of fruit and stuff. I offered her some carrots earlier, but she was full. I want to be able to give her some veggies too, so I’ll try just that tomorrow instead of fruit. But we got her on Tuesday. She has a vet appointment on March 4th.

Is her beak and nails too long? I wanted to get them trimmed if they are.

I have to make sure my boa or any of the other snakes don’t get out and try to eat her too!

Well..here she is...

Yes her beak & nails do look a little too long & should be trimmed at the vet.

You can also offer her a mixed variety of both fruit & veg (both are very good for her) & not too many peanuts. If you have to offer nuts then almonds are a little better for her than peanuts.

 My first parrot!

I bought this bag of treats at the pet store that’s pretty much just all dehydrated fruits. She loves them.

The ingredients read:
raisins (golden and dark), pineapple, papaya, banana chips, shelled peanus, pumplin seed, apricots, mangoes, carrots, almonds, cashews, apple rings, coconut, white potatoes, shelled brazil nuts, and shelled pecans, sulfur dioxide

And great news! During the day with have her in a smaller cage (still a nice size, just not as tall) in the dining room then at night she goes into a dark room. Well tonight during dinner she was in the cage with her head lying back and just swinging it back and forth, having a great ol’ time.

Then when it was time to put her into her other cage (around 9:00) then she let me pick her up and do it! She didn’t even hurt me either!

sulphur can be deadly to parrots. Try buying organic dried fruits or any other brand that don’t have sulphur in them. Most big name brand dried fruits do contain it.
