 Any one know about canarys??? mainly feet!!

my mum recently has adopted a canary from work. the woman who owned it has died and since then it has completely stoped singing, the main thing that concerns me is its feet. its feet have jagged points on them asif its been picking at them and one toe seems stuck over the other! any help????
