 Chicken Died In My Arms

What a sad day! I want to cry for her but can’t.

I was sitting in my car as my son was sleeping in his car seat. I watched as the flock of 1 rooster and 5 girls went into the brush between my neighbors and our yard which they have done so many times before. The only difference today was the clucking and running of the flock. I saw one of my Rhode Island Reds run for her life with an animal chasing her. I didn’t see its head nor its tail. All I saw was an orange body. I ran out of the car screaming, ran through the brush full of pricker bushes, poison ivy, wild grape vines, and whatever else. The first thing I saw was a pile of feathers. Looking a couple of feet to the left, I found her lying down as if ready to lay an egg and her right wing slightly spread. I talked softly to her trying to calm her. I went to pick her up and she moved a couple of feet away. I approached again and this time she let me pick her up. As I carried her back to our yard, she started to flap and crapped all over my pants. I kept talking to her, got to our yard, and laid her down. As I put her down her eyes closed and she passed away.

I called my neighbor from across the street (who has more chicken experience than I) to confirm what I already knew. He told me what to do and I got on it. He told me I was doing well since I only lost one after getting them as chickes 11 months ago. He told me how he lost 23 who were ready for their first night outside in one night to a rat. Didn’t make me feel too much better.

So, I prepared her grave and went to get her. Well, the rooster was constantly crooning and walking around the house after putting the girls in their hiding place. He must have sensed the danger had past because when I went to get the dead girl he was coming with the hens. He saw me pick her up and came at me with his wings spread and making a scary sound. I put her down and took a few steps back. They all went up to her dead body. He pecked at her head and tried to corral her. Three of the other girls pecked at her and then walked away with him. One girl, another Red, pecked at her and then began preening her "sisters’" feathers. He returned and took her away. When he wasn’t looking, I picked her up again. He saw and did the same as previously mentioned. This time, the "sister" spent 5 - 7 minutes preening the dead bird. My 5 year old daughter was telling her, "It’s ok, Paula (bird’s name). She’s dead. There’s nothing you can do." Once she left, I had my daughter stand guard against the rooster so I could bury her. He saw and I think he finally figured it out.

I am so worried about going out to their coop tomorrow in fear that the fox would have returned. Now I know why my cousin stopped keeping them. If only I got there a little sooner.

Thanks for listening.

Awwww! I’m so sorry. I’ve never personally owned a chicken, but I have had enough animal experience to know that losing any animal hurts. I feel so sorry for you and your grieving chicken family.

Thats so sad. It just like the time coons slaughtered my mothers ducks and chickens. Feathers, blood, wings, and feet every where. It looked like they blew up.

Are you sure it was a fox? Placing down coyote urine can deter them from entering your property. If it was a cat, then you may need to trap it.

Neighbors and I are positive it was a fox. A couple of days later they lost 2 hens and saw the fox headed back for the rooster. The wife came out screaming and scared the fox away. Basically, they lost the whole flock minus the roo.

My cat, who has watched the chickens from afar since we brought them home as chicks, has stepped up his watch. He always chases other cats away and now we hardly see any. He lets the neighbors’ cat stay as long as it keeps its distance. He’s been staying out all night hunting near the chicken coop. The other day he went in the coop and run with me to lock them up, feed them, check water, etc. While I was doing that, he was spraying the perimeter. Now, he is neutered so I know he’s not doing it for girls. I think he was actually doing it to protect them!

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. My first chicken died in my arms almost ten years ago (I was seven). It isn’t an easy thing to do, even if it is "just a chicken" (according to many).

Anyway, I STRONGLY recommend keeping your cat inside, at least at night! The fox can definitely hunt your cat! The reason that the coyote and fox populations are growing in urban areas is that they have a steady food supply - cats! It’s up to you, just thought I’d warn you. I know so many people and work for a rescue where I hear of so many people whose cats are lost to predators.

In my opinion, he should be inside unless you are directly supervising him (just like a dog), but that is totally your decision.

Anyway, I am very sorry for your chicken loss. I recently lost a chicken to a coyote (in the middle of the city!) and have since kept a very close eye on my other three girls. We even installed another latch on the coop out of paranoia, lol. They definitely are social animals and feel the loss of one of their flock. Ours watched her taken off by the coyote and screamed and ran around and flapped their wings as he took her across a very busy street. It has taken them a while to adjust their "pecking order" without her.

RIP Addie:

No more chickens have been taken since we lost the roo. Then again, I keep them locked in their run now. Unfortunately, it is not as big as I would like but we will be moving soon. Our new house (in Pennsylvania we are in RI right now) will have over 2 acres of land and my husband said we could have about an acre of it for the coop and run along with a wire topping so the crows don’t get in.

My cat has been back in the house, only going out for a few minutes to an hour at a time. Also, the wild rabbits are back out in full force. They weren’t around during the days of the fox attack.

At night, I’m hearing an animal call. It sounds like a cat who lost his voice howling. I actually thoought it was my cat until I saw him sleeping with my daughter.
