What is the easiest and cheapest parrot?

I would like to get one but i don’t know what kind. I need it to have a fairly small cage. And it needs to be easy to take care of, and cheap. And not too loud. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

All parrots cost a lot. Most range from $100- $15,000 and beyond.
How much were you looking into spending in total?

Yes, around that price, like 250, 275, and maybe 300.

Like it or not...
Foulfredy is right, get a picture. You may not think it’s nice but from you’re asking for a picture of a parrot is the go.

You cannot have ANY parrot in a small cage. They need tons of room to stretch, play, have toys in & you need to let them out on a daily basis.

There is no such thing as a parrot that ’isn’t too loud’ or easy to care for.

You’re really asking the impossible here.

I would like to know exactly what size cage you call fairly small too.

I believe you could afford a lovebird, cage and all, for roughly that price.

Try looking on craigslist or in your local paper for birds that may need to be adopted. You might find a deal on a friendly parrot, with cage, that has an adoption fee in your range.

Budgies are much cheaper and a good choice. Just be sure to purchase an appropriate sized cage.

1/2" bar spacing is fine for a budgie.

The all round size of the cage you mention is a VERY minimum sized cage for a budgie. Over time you should think about buying a larger cage for the budgie, bar spacing no bigger than 1/2".

heh one bird needs to have an entire toy box filled with toys that you alternate weekly :-P At least mine did. I wouldn’t go with under 2-4 depending one the size of the cage.

Budgies seem to like flashy things, swings, little rings that slide, bells and balls so start with those. IMO budgies are like P-Lets. P-Lets require more toys than a toddler!! However, its fun picking out new toys. I think its a bit more exciting for me than my bird.

Most toys aren’t expensive. I think the majority of the ones I bought were between $2 and $5, except for the more expensive wood/rope toys. Top Wing generally sells lots of cheap toys that may not be as flashy as the wood ones, but are just as entertaining to your bird.

As for other things, you should purchase at least 2 pieces of cuttle bone, some vitamins, extra perches, a ladder or two, and some type of nest box or little house where he can hide.

Thanks! But should i buy enough to change them periodically? or should i just buy enough for like a month then change them? and if so, how many for one cage?

Enough to change periodically is preferable.

The amount you put in depends on your cage. Since you cage is very small you can’t put many toys in at all.

As a general rule your budgie should have room to move easily as well as exercise it’s wings in the cage without hitting toys, sides of the cage, perches etc...this is why that size cage should be changed to a larger cage over time.

For the time being you can build a small play stand for the budgie, buy a toy box for him & hang some toys on the stand & some in the cage. Alternate them & encourage the budgie to rummage through the toy box too.

Pine & stainless steal screws or nails. Any other metal isn’t safe.

Never use glue, even if it’s a tiniest amount & hidden your budgie can still chew through to the glue & ingest it.

If you can get hold of any bottlebrush & grevillea branches these are even better for your budgie, a perfect size for them & are very much loved by them. They can eat the flowers too. These trees are native to Australia but I do know the bottlebrush is available through some parts of the world, unsure about the grevillea.

Never use sandpaper as a base or bottom for anything. They tend to ingest too much of this & it causes health problems. Newspaper is the easiest way to go as you can just roll it up & ditch it daily without any scrubbing. The ink in news paper these days is safe for birds.

If you google cockatiel/budgie play gyms you’ll get some really good ideas to work on.
