 Opinions wanted: re:baby birds

I have a question and want to see what you guys think on this... say you had a breeding pair of Cockatiels and a breeding pair of doves and one of the pairs laid their eggs and refused to/didnt sit on them for whatever reason, assuming eggs are fertile and hatching temps are the same would you be able to give the eggs to the other pair and have them raise the babies or would you... If not why?

when my birds laid their first clutch, they didn’t really knkow what to do with them. i left them in the cage for a while, and then took them out. the second clutch they were a little better, but, still didn’t have the hang of it. by the third clutch they had it, and i haven’t had a problem since.

I’m gonna go with maybe, and if they did hatch and raise them then the babies wouldn’t be as healthy as possible bc doves and cockatiels eat slightly different things. They would probably hatch the other eggs provided that they are roughly the same size, but if they smell too much like the other bird they may kill them, i’m not sure. You don’t have anything to lose in trying if they other parents abandoned the eggs.

smell is not an issue birds have really bad sense of smell... and the being healthy thing isnt an issue either because the parent birds are fed exactly the same things during the raising process and the doves wouldnt be left in the cage with the tiels post weaning... just for the first few weeks... I was more concerned with maybe the amounts parents feed being different or that sort of thing.... but thanks for your opinions :D

You have to be careful!!! They will notice that they aren’t their eggs and may reject them especially because of different color!! Cockatiels eggs are white and I don’t know about doves!! I breed cockatiels so feel free to ask questions, and I will try to answer them!! I have five cockatiels. I would recommend to handfeed the cockatiels when they hatch, if they abandon them because the doves may not take to the cockatiel babies. I hope this was some help!!

I would be more concerned about the dove choking the cockateils just because the doves beak is so much longer. Actually the more i think about it I don’t know how well tha twould work bc of the different shapes of thier beaks even... hmmm... just more food for thought

That too was one of my concerns with the beaks.... but I have a pair of tiels whom only one is a known female the other we have no idea but other breeders have told me based on color likely a male... but none of their eggs ever hatch anyway... so if I tried at all it would more likely be tiels with dove eggs...

Why not find another cockatiel to raise the eggs? Or I suppose you could try an incubator but if they don’t have mom for the first 3 days, even if you plan to hand feed, their chances of survival are minimal.

IMO, the kindest thing to do in this situation would be to remove the eggs, freeze them, and hope for better luck with the next clutch.
