Do budgies make good companions? shoulder birds?

i want to get another bird. we already have 2 familey pets that are cockatiels but they fly away all the time and dont talk. male budgies can talk with training right? alot of the time i am at home baby sitting little kids who go to bed early at 7. i could spend time in the evenings training them. i realy do like cokatiels better but i want to be able to train a bird to do something and i heard that cockatiels cant learn much. (i am also looking for an inexpencive bird so i cant get like, a conure or something even though i would love to) do budgies stay on shoulders or do they fly away every time you stand up? i realy love animals and have experience in caring for cockatiels. if i got ahandraised baby cockatiel could i train it? what about a budgie? pros and cons of each one?

A cockatiel is more than trainable! It is also a social bird with the occasional exception. They talk beautifully, well if they don’t then tell that to my cockatiels. Female cockatiels don’t talk, males do.

If you want a social bird you need to look at the socializing of the cockatiels you have first. Everything said they are is simply not true. And if you’re having this problem with both & not just one, then chances are you’re also gonna have this problem with your budgie.

ALL parrots are trainable to be social, friendly, shoulder birds & some can talk better than others. Most of the time talking ability have to do with the individuality rather than the species. Also if the bird has the potential to talk & is not taught correctly, it will not talk.

My advice is to thoroughly research cockatiels social skills, behaviours, handling, talking ability before diving into a budgie. IF it is by accident a human error that you tiels are unsocial & don’t talk then the same mistake will be made with the new budgie.

no. the only reason that our cockatiels dont talk is because i was only 6 when we got them and didnt understand that they could talk like bigger parrots. however they are very tame because they are being handled alot.

But you say they keep flying off. Well trained birds don’t do this. Have you also considered clipping your birds. This may bring them down a peg or 2.

You’re obviously not aware that age has nothing to do with talking either. You can still teach your tiels to talk if you want to.

Getting a budgie because you’re unhappy with your tiels (this sounds like it’s what you’re saying in your original post) isn’t necessarily the way to go.

You also need to consider the jealousy that may come out of your tiels if you get a budgie. They’re gonna be far from friendly if they suddenly see another bird in the house, especially if you put the budgie first in everything & spend more time with it than the tiels.

let me explain: they are very very soceil they just cant talk. they love to just sit on my shoulder when im on the computer or reading. they are friendly, but i want to get a bird that is very likley to talk. i am at home alone babysitting alot when the children are in bed and it woluld be a perfect opportunity for me to train a bird. i was asking about a budgie because i wanted to try something different. my cockatiels are also female so they definetly would be hard to train to talk. they are 6 years old. i would have tryed if i had known, but when we got them i was still little and my mom didnt know that cockatiels could be trained to talk.
they know step up, and when i say food they screach, and jill (the one on my shoulder in the pic) knows that when i say head scratch she moves to a corner of the cage for me to scratch her head.
so would a budgie be good to get if i had experience with cockatiels?

YES if your tiels are flying off as you did state in the original post then unless you’re able to train them properly to not fly off chances are your budgie will do the same thing.

As an experienced person with cockatiels you should know the answer to this.

As an EXPERIENCED cockatiel & parrot handler....I did say to you clipping your tiels wings may bring them down a peg or two. This makes them easier to handle, train & stops them flying where ever they like. Same goes for budgies.

As I have said, if your tiels are flying off all the time, like you said they are chances are your budgie or new tiel is gonna do the same until you figure out how to stop it.

There is a difference between tame & trained. You tiels may be tame, it does not mean they’re trained. A well trained bird will not continually fly off.

Getting a budgie is simply your choice. Just be aware of what can possibly happen if you don’t clip & train your tiels to not fly off. New birds, of any kind, always learn & pick up bad habits form existing birds.
