 What should I do?

I’ve been looking into birds for a few years now. Although I hate Petco, they’re the only place around here with birds, and actually they’re all very healthy, lively, and they know step-up and a few other commands. This will be my first parrot, but I have read a lot about their care and I will handle it for 1-3 hours daily. There are four beautiful conures there- a dusky, a green-cheeked, a sun, and a jenday.

The hardest part is deciding. My two favorites, the evil little green-cheeked (but I would be fine with a few nips after he was tamed down) and the one I absolutely adore, Teddy the dusky! The only problem is, Teddy and Basil (the GCC) are so close, they preen each other when they get let out of the cages, and yesterday I went to visit them and the employees were talking about them while putting them on perches, and Basil came out, then Teddy started screeching until he was let out too. I really want the dusky, especially, because he’s very sweet, smart but he’s still a classic conure goofball. But what I don’t want is to bring home a devastated bird, screaming because he was taken away from his best friend. I can’t get both, and although the Jenday is absolutely gorgeous I’d rather have the dusky or green-cheek. I can put up with screaming, screeching, etc. when they vocalize normally, but I really would feel terrible breaking apart those conures. They’re also cheaper than the sun (quite unfriendly) and the jenday, but that’s not a factor.

I’m torn. Help me-what should I do?

If you can’t get both conures, it would be better not to separate them. Try looking into adopting a bird, petfinder might have some parrots in your area that are up for adoption. Just a thought.

I think I will get the jenday if I really have to. I just can’t break the two little conures’ hearts. The nearest conures from Petfinder are at least an hour away and are all in pairs.

Have you looked into bird rescues in your area? I found a few in my area through petfinder.com. I ended up getting a cockatoo AND a Blue and Gold Macaw both for under $300. Both amazing, loving birds. There are millions of homeless unwanted birds and buying one from a petstore will make 1 less in a rescue that won’t get a forever home. I wanted a big bird but they also had hundreds of smaller birds from cockatiels to conures to amazons.

If the Dusky Conure seems the friendliest, get that one.
Once you get it home YOU can become its new companion! You must be able to dedicate at least 1-2 hours of time to your new companion for it not to get lonely.
I breed conures and I have noticed that if you provide them with allot of toys they can and will entertain themselves whether they were close to another conure or not.
I would definately stick to the bird that tends to be sweet at the first encounter!
The other ones can be tought to bond with you with patience and time!
Good Luck!
