 Wild birds

We have a nice window which looks out back at our 1 acre plus backyard. We have plenty of crows and hawks and in the early spring there was a big fight between the two species that took place everyday for about a week. The winner was the crows and since then we have seen lots in the yard and a couple of hawks every once in a while but not in our yard. Two weeks ago I was outside and watched a hawk fly over our yard with a small bird right beside it. The small bird wasn’t going after the hawk but it resembled a child/parent flight. It glided just like the adult. Last week, there were more battles but these happening in our woods. I heard the crows and found lots of crow feathers throughout the yard. This week, the crows are gone but there are lots (I mean 10 - 20) of those little birds flying over our yard in the circular pattern and gliding just like the hawks. These guys are not afraid to fly right above my head! They don’t stop anywhere where I can get a closer look and I don’t have binoculars to look at them closely. They chased after a small bird that was flying through the yard and the pair of cardinals that live in the bush about 30 feet from the bird feeder don’t come out when they are flying. Can these be young hawks? Could the battle be about breeding grounds? I don’t want to get rid of them. We let the crows stay even though they were loud and rude but they did win the war. So, if these little ones won the last war then they get to stay. We are just really curious and hoping someone might have an idea as to what is going on.

Thank you!
