 Cockatiel Questions

I am getting a cockatiel in about a week and I have a few questions. I go to school during the day, so should I buy more toys so it will be entertained??? Also, what food mix should I buy? And should i bathe it? I am buying a cage soon, it’s very big, so it will have lots of room.

 Cockatiel Questions

Congrats on your soon to be new cockatiel! A cockatiel can be a very loving companion. It would be a GREAT idea to have several toys for it to entertain itself. Be sure to rotate the toys (in and out of the cage) often so your bird will not become bored.
As far as Feed: Go to your local petstore to see a variety of feed for your new bird. You can also ask the breeder, person, or pet store what the bird is currently eating. It is a good idea to introduce fruits and veggies to your new companion.
I always suggest that people go to the internet do research on the species of bird that they are buying. There are many things to avoid feeding your bird.
As far as bathing your bird, many say just to either mist the bird with a spray bottle or place a dish with water in it so it can bathe itself. I am a breeder and I personally allow my birds to bathe themselves. There have been occasions where I have bathed my bird in TEARLESS baby shampoo.
I hope this information was helpful.

 Cockatiel Questions

Thank you very much for the response! I heard from a book that it was okay to give birds human food, like chips. That sounds kinda bad for the bird though. Anyway.......I’m probally just going to get a standard cockatiel or a lutino. I’ll probally buy a bath and tons of toys for it. Thanks again for the response!

By the way. I have found a trusted pet store with really nice cockatiels. They are all hand raised and really friendly.

 Cockatiel Questions

I do have two more questions I forgot about. Do I have to clip my cockatiel’s nails? And it has it’s wings clipped, do I have to clip them again?

you do have to clip nails, or else they will get very sharp and it will be very uncomfortable to hold them. (they’re nails will dig into your skin) I use regular nail clippers but be sure to clip only the tip, because if you clip it too short they will bleed. Make sure to always have styptic powder on hand (stops bleeding and can be bought at just about any bet store) or flour will work too.

 Cockatiel Questions

Do Cockatiel’s have a certain time of the year that they molt, or is it different for each one?

 Cockatiel Questions

i have not had cockatiel ’s in a while but i do remember that they don’t start til about 6 months of age and then wait a good 6 months til their next molt. then after that is was usually a yearly thing. it last about 3 - 6 weeks give or take and my birds are usually grumpy during molt they get nippy if you play with their feathers i give mine a higher protein diet while molting i use boiled eggs a few soft beans. And to answer a few of your other questions a good way to keep your birds nail dull so you dont have to clip them in sandpaper perches and a cuttlebone for their beak, and clipping wings is very simple ask them to show ou once when you need her wings clipped again and you should be able to get it the first try and do it yourself from there, Good luck i hope you like your new addition!

Thank you for the response. I was a little worried about Melody because she was losing lots of feathers. I have heard of the sand paper perches, so I’ll buy some soon. Thanks again for the response.

Where are you located?? That tiel looks just like one that we sold at my pet store a few days ago. A locally owned shop in Seattle that clips wings for a very low price!

What kind of food are you feeding?

Sorry, I live in Ohio. I’m feeding her a mix of seeds and zoopreem fruit blend pellets.
