I’m thinking about getting 2 Parakeets! My local petshop sells parakeets, so i’m thinking of getting some. I want a green female and a blue male. They’ll probably tell me in the petshop, but how do you tell if its a male or female? Cause I want the right one. Second, can you take them out of their cage and hold them/play with them? Cause i want to hold my birds here and there, and i’ve seen people holding them on videos, but I dont know if they’re trained or what. I’m about to do some simple research on what they eat, drink, what to put on the bottom of the cage etc. Will a male and female breed? Are they noisy? I’m just a little kid who wants a parakeet, so I just need to learn the basics on taking good care of them.

I’m thinking about getting 2 Parakeets! I know there is a way to tell something about the bands that are right above their beaks (across their "nose") but I am not sure which color means what or how acurate it is for sexing... but im sure if you do a search you can find something... assuming the cage and food and everything is right and you have an appropriate nest box I would imagine like any other bird they would breed but I have never tried so i dont know.. I also wouldnt recomend getting breeding stock form a pet store as you never really know if they are related (seeing as they are from teh same store) or what health issues their parents have... Some parakeets can be held and others will fly away scared, most pet store keets are afraid of people and run/bite and your best bet for a tame keet would probably be to find a breeder although I guess with enough time and patience even a scared petstore one could be tamed... and some keets are noisy others are not... I have had some that never make a sound and others who screamed their heads off alot of the time so it really varies from bird to bird but I find that in general they all make noise to an extent and it alot of them like to "talk" to other birds or cage mates
gl!

Quote: know there is a way to tell something about the bands that are right above their beaks (across their "nose") but I am not sure which color means what or how acurate it is for sexing... but im sure if you do a search you can find something That band of skin above their beaks is called a "cere." In young birds, it is lavendar. In females, it begins to turn a crusty looking brown, and males it turns a bright blue.
I have mine finger tamed. Initially, I clip a wing. Don’t do this yourself unless you know what you are doing. Then I train the bird to sit on my finger, which can take a while. Eventually, my bird will sit on my finger and not fly away (too often, lol) and I don’t usually have to reclip. Hope this helps!

I’m thinking about getting 2 Parakeets! What do I put on the bottom of the tank and what size tank should I get? I’m going to get one with a bird bath and places to put the bird seed(says organic veggies and millet) and water.

I’m thinking about getting 2 Parakeets! They are very social animals. Mine is on my shoulder right now while talking and singing his little heart out! lol and I have never trained him to do that. He just naturally comes out of his cage and sits on my shoulder for hours while I’m working or something. (I always leave the cage door open)
