 Outdoor Birds

What kinds of pet birds can be kept outside all year long. I live in england, so it does not get too cold. I am thinking of building a very large enclosure, about 9 square feet large.

England gets pretty cold compared to where most pet birds originate. I live in South Florida(subtropic temperature and humidity) so I can keep my birds out year round. I’m almost 100% positive that it gets too cold for them in the winter where you are. Um.....you might be able to keep some button quail and dove species out year long but no parrots etc...

the worst i have ever got in my area is about 0 degrees celcius. i was wondering if i could keep canaries, finches or cockatiels outside. The school i go to me keeps free range indian peacocks, doves and flamingos without any trouble.

The coldest that a parrot should be is about 18 degrees celcius.

The coldest that a finch should be is about 20 degrees celcius.

A lot of people who have parrots in the UK do keep them outside successfully. Just take the right steps to keep them out of the cold winds & drafts, wet, make sure they have plenty of shelter & heating perches if you’re really worried. But to say you can’t keep them outside because you’re in the UK isn’t entirely true.

Also birds grow up to get used to what ever climate they’re in whether it’s hot or cold. I live in a stinker of place, we have plenty of wild cockatoos & parrots here too, doesn’t mean they cope with our heat because it’s where they come from. Many don’t & we have to take steps to keep them cool.

If you google parrot forums or something similar you’ll come across a few UK ones.

Cockatoos are native to australia and so are other parrots.

Yes and in parts of Australia it is humid like Florida thus making it possible for cockatoos to live outdoors in Florida but it is too cold in the UK for them.

Same with african greys and macaws since they come from the tropics.

Cockatiels are like cockatoos in this sense.

Parts of Australia are also unbearable for cockatoos & parrots because of the heat. Like other countries we also get extreme heat & cold temps. We often get told we can’t keep our birds outside as well, even though majority of it is a hot climate. It does seem to be a US thing to keeping birds inside & not outside & no matter where we it’s often made out to be terrible to have birds live outside where ever we live.

Perhaps you should check out a few UK forums & tell them they can’t have their birds live outside then.

As I’ve said & my point was, it can be done if it’s done properly & the correct steps are taken. All it takes is finding the correct information about the outdoor birds in your area. Because a place is too cold does not mean it can’t be done if it’s done properly.

If there’s a possibility these birds will freeze to death and/or be unhappy/unhealthy outdoors, simply don’t get them with plans to keep them outdoors! Finches and canaries are VERY delicate birds and even if it’s warm simple temperature fluctuations, below 0 or not, stresses them out too much.

You can keep chickens, ducks, turkey, peacocks, etc. outdoors basically anywhere as long as you have the right enclosure. Don’t underestimate chickens, they are very smart and have unique personalities. They are a TON of fun! I’ve had them since I was seven and I’d never want any other outdoor bird. They are easy to take care of, provide delicious fresh eggs (cruelty free!), fertilize the garden, and are generally the happiest pet you could have. Being outside barbequeing with friends and having the chickens wandering around is really fun. I have a couple that walk right up and hunch down for a pet, one even chases me around until I pick her up for some loves : D

Chickens have thousands of different vocalizations and are extremely social birds. They love company, and when raised with humans will associate them as one of their flock, just like any other type of bird.

Instead of picking the animal you want most or you think would be coolest to have, pick an animal based on how well and properly you can care for it. If you want an outdoor enclosure, choose birds that THRIVE in outdoor enclosures, not ones that might be able to survive in one.

Good luck on your search!

I don’t know about canaries, finches etc...cokcatiels are fine, again if the right steps are taken.

This can go on & on within this forum but unless you speak to UK forum people yourself about this really you won’t get anywhere.

No one will know better than bird owners in the UK.....
