 Uvb lights and parrots

i am getting a quaker in a few months

and i was just wondering how many of you actually use them for your birds

i do not know how i am going to supply the light b/c it needs to be at least 2 ft away (that is what i have heard anyway)

and i cannot hang it from the ceiling my parents would kill me lol

i can deffinatly take him out side 6-8 months out of the year in a cage or harness of some sort of course so that would not be a problem but i have NEVER heard of lights ofr birds as being required

none of any of the books or online articles i have read even mentioned the use of full spectrum lighting so that is why i am wondering how important it is to have a bulb for them

is there a supplement you can give them instead?

thanks

I think full spectrum lighting is mainly used in colder & darker climates & for those who can’t regularly take their birds outside. So from that you should know whether you really need one or not. It isn’t a must have unless you can’t give your bird natural sunlight on a very regular basis.

Full spectrum lighting isn’t a common thing we use in Australia.

ok thanks i can take him out side about 6-8 months of the year on a pretty regular basis

someone on another forum was talking about putting them in a regular ceiling light(like we use for lighting the house)

would this be safe for people and other pets to be under this all the time?

no. usually those would be the compact ones or the spirals that look like a florescent. those are made improperly and can have bad radiation effects. what i do for my parakeets in winter is i have an mvb like this one and a "dome stand" like this one here is some info on why not to use coil bulbs info if you can figure out how to use a long tube those are okay too provided it’s a reptisun 10.0, reptiglo 8.0, or reptisun 5.0. make sure not a reptiglo 10.0 though.

oh hehe should’ve read your name. sorry but yeah the mvb at about 1.5-2’ away works well for my keets. they have a big cage, partially covered so they can get away if they choose.
