i personally wouldn’t put him in that cage at all. if the chews on the bars and gets the rust in his tummy he will get sick. but if its only for 2 weeks. he should be okay. there is some stuff you can buy for his feathers too. its in a spray bottle and you can find it at most pet stores. just ask someone there and they should know what you’re talking about.. i forget what its called but you just spray it on their feather like you would water and it helps them get healthier faster. that and giving him a bath once a week or so will get the job done right quick. when i notice my b&gs’ tail feathers starting to fray and i give him a bath they look great by the time he dries. so whomever had him before pry didn’t bath him is my guess... as far as the fruit... it may take time... just try giving him some in his bowl every day or so and maybe sooner or later he will think "hmmm maybe i should try this stuff. i might like it" or offer it to him when you are holding him. if he attaches to you (since you will be his primary care provider) then you can even try showing him that you like eating that fruit too by taking a bite then offering it to him. then he will think "okay she likes it... maybe i will too"

i know that’s a lot to read... but I’m only trying to help you... (if anyone feels i am wrong... PLEASE correct me)

 New Blue and gold

what diet is he currently on?

macaws need a higher fat diet than alot of parrots so make sure to also give him alot of nuts and stuff

as far as eating fruits

he should mainly get veggies and then fruits less often as they are higher in sugar

my quaker will only eat veggies and fruits of they are on a cabob e will not eat them out of a dish

also DO NOT bite off of any of his food you have alot of bacteria in your saliva that can make him very ill

and that cage is very bad as well

i recomend getting a stainless steel cage if possible b/c he will most likley destroy the paint on a new cage too in time

although that should stop once he has something to do

i dont recomend the spray for his feather
with proper nutrition and baths they will return to normal

he should get baths 3-4x a week

i reccomend a vet visit as well to rule out any problems especially since he is exposed to that rusty cage metal can be very toxic to birds

anyway hopefully now that you got him he will have a better life

that poor thing has no toys i am surprised he isnt a plucker he has got to be bored to death lol
he looks good though surprisingly
anyway good luck

i dont think i have anything else to add but i will let you know

ok well just make sure to get a ton of toys

they dont always play with them when they are new but he will eventually

get a bunch of toys of varying textures and ease of destruction so it keeps him busy

good luck

also if you want to know the sex

go to avianbiotech. com and you can get them sexed for around $20-$25

I’m sorry I just have to put this out there........ What is with everyone saying these birds need more veggies the fruits?????????? Fruits and nuts are their natural diet in the wild.... Are you serious??

I use a macaw diet it’s made by fiesta, it has little pieces of bread, all kinds of nuts and seed, small bits of fruit and a few other things. All great for your macaw. Mine would eat stuff like fruit when I first got her, you just have to keep offering it to them, act like your taking a bite and then offer it, it sometimes takes time. Mine eats alot of stuff, her favorite is spagetti, only a little bit occasionally though. You don’t want your macaw to grow breasts.

A good diet is the key to a healthy looking bird with beautiful shiny feathers. Getting a shower perch is a great idea they love taking showers with you. But a spary bottle works for now.

umm you need to read more it is proven that that crap is bad for birds as a base diet on occasion sure but not all the time fruits, veggies, brown rice, whole grain pasta, and nuts are good and as a base you feed a pellet diet i use zupreem for him you need to do your research your bird wont live out his full life if you only feed him that

and exactly a good diet is key and yours doesnt have one if i sound rude i am sorry but that stuff isnt good for them

It’s not???? Then why does the zoo I volunteer at feed it to their parrots, I did my research, tons of it. I study every animal I rescue or buy. The fiesta macaw diet is great. And my macaw is doing great, It doesn’t just get the macaw diet. It gets fresh fruits, pasta, nuts, fruit pellets, veggies, and more. She gets things that she would actually eat in the wild, not just a diet you get in a bag. That is what the vet that I am working with at the zoo told me to do, healthy birds don’t just eat pellets and the stuff they get in those diets. They need plenty of fruits and nuts. I would never ignore what he tells me, he’s had 50 years experiance with exotics, especially macaws. He has a macaw that is 80 years old and still happy and healthy.

See when I do research I don’t use the internet, alot of false information on there. I use my sources, a great exotics vet and books from the library. I have a 25 year old umbrella cockatoo, a 16 year old yellow headed amazon a a scarlet macaw. All happy, unplucked and attached with a great diet. Full healthy feathers.

You don’t sound any ruder then all the other people I’ve come across on here that think they know more then me.... I’m going to college to be an exotics vet tech, I know alot more then you think. A heck of alot more. Especially since I work with them at the zoo, Ever had your bird regurgitate for you, One of my favorites at the zoo is a green wing macaw, I’m the only one he does that for.

ok.... so our vets have different opinions..... Our birds are healthy and thats all that matters, you believe in using pellet as a base, I mix pellet in with her macaw blend along with all kinds of other things that are good for her on the side. Honestly I read the ingrediants on all of my pets food before I buy it and I love the fiesta macaw blend, The nuts, the breads, the bits of fruit, their are some pellets in there, and the seed she doesn’t, she actually throws it. And the difference between me and some other owners is that I feed fresh fruits, her favorite are pears. I feed fresh veggies, brocolli is her favorite in that group. She loves peanut butter bread and peanut butter crackers along with cheese ravioli and spagetti.
