 Chicken caresheets

Hi! Welcome to the chicken hobby, its a great one to have. I have 13 chickens, 3 turkeys, 2 guineas, 7 ducks, and 2 geese. Chickens are really fun to have. There should be a rooster to hen ratio of 1:8 at least. Ours is 1:12 and our hens look good. If there are too many roosters, they will breed the hens too much and the hens can lose all of the feathers off of their backs. Each chicken should have approximately 3 sq. ft. per bird in the hen house. The reason for it being so small is that the hens barely spend any time in there, except to eat, lay eggs, and sleep. Our chickens much prefer to be outside, even in winter. Chickens need a good food in order to lay eggs and remain healthy. We feed our poultry a mixture of scratch grains, cracked corn, and layer mash. Our hens are 4 years old and still laying very well. Also, clean water must be available 24/7. I leave about 5 or 6 waterers full, that way there is always a clean one available. If you get baby chicks, they need to be kept in a brooder with a heat lamp. Baby chicks can go outside in their coop full time if the nighttime temp stays above 50 degrees. If not, leave them in at night. Good egg laying breeds are Wyandottes, Lakenvelders, and Rhode Island Reds. I suggest you visit this website. This site has a great selection of chicks, and good info. You can even receive a catalog for free. Just click the free catalog tab at the top of the page and insert your information. If you have any other questions, just ask!
