 Chicken questions

hello thanks for looking at this!


I am getting into this chicken thing and i have a few questions.

1. How do i sex baby chicks...i mean baby baby like 2-3 days old. (the feather method looks the easiest...but does it work???)

2. If a rooster mates with a hen once how long will she stay fertile (is only the first batch of eggs she lays fertile until the rooster mates again?)

Their is an old wisetale that if you pick up chicks by the head (it doesn’t hurt them) and watch their reaction you can sex them. Males will fight alot, hens will relax and not fight. We used this method this year and ended up with 9 hens, 1 rooster, when we picked chicks that didn’t fight. So it worked pretty well. I’m not sure about your second question, but the rooster will breed hens constantly, so almost every egg laid will be fertile if their is a rooster in the pen.
