 My sun conure is crazy

her name is rio; i found out she was a her about 6 months ago when she laid an egg. she’s back at it; she spends all of her time running around under the newspaper on the bottom of her cage (so she looks FILTHY), attacking everything that comes near and making a sound like a car starter (but she never starts). she’s laid 3 eggs in the past week. i’m making sure she gets plenty of calcium.

what i’m wondering is, she lives in a HUGE cage with my senegal parrot, tiki, who may or may not be male. if he was, does anyone know if a conure and a senegal can mate? maybe i should give her a nest box, just in case?

no they cannot mate they are different species

but they should not be housed together anyway

to start you are going to need to seperate them and hopefully others will come on for some more help i dont know alot about stopping egglaying behavior b/c i have never had to deal with it personally

this is why i made sure to get a male lol

oh, i couldn’t separate them--they’d die of broken hearts. they’ve lived together for ages (by the way, i was jmusclegirl). i just wondered if it was something i should consider before i keep taking her eggs away from her.

my grey and my lilac-crown are best buds, too. the only one i for sure know (knew) the gender was my grey; he was surgically sexed before the guy who gave him to me got him. i’m pretty sure my lilac-crown is male; he fell in love with a ceramic turkey years ago and spent hours displaying for "her." tiki is still a mystery.

if anyone does know how to stop this egg-production thing rio has going (that doesn’t involve separating her from tiki--because she’d just stop laying eggs to pine away), i’d appreciate hearing about it.

well i mean is she has chosen your senegal as a surogate mate it may be why she is laying eggs

mostly what i have heard with parrots is to let them lay the eggs then sit on them and eventually they will abandon them and then you can remove them also changing the amount of daylight hours she is getting will also help (giving her less daylight hours)

hmmmm like i said i dont know much about this lol

but i belong to a quaker parrot forum, quakerparrots . com and eventhough they are not about suns they would be more than happy to help you and they are very knowlegable many of them own suns as well so they know about them too
since the bird forum here can get kind of dead sometimes other than that try finding a sun conure forum i am sure there is one around somewhere lol

and yep i know about the name change i am on the beardie forum too :)

good luck

tell her if she doesnt stop laying eggs, jim will get her. lmao

but dont take the eggs away from her. she will just lay more to replace the "stolen" eggs. it sounds like she has it in for your senagal. theres not much you can do to discourage this behavior. keep her on calcium. eggshells are wonderful. boil up some eggs, and peal the shells off when they have cooled. crush them to small powder pieces and sprinkle on her food. you can also feed her every part of the hard boiled egg (your others will love it to) just be careful. eggs are good in small amounts. they can be very fattening to birds.

also make sure you have a box and nesting materials in the cage. if she can get her nest set and lay eggs, she will care for the eggs she has now, and not lay anymore. just dont take away the eggs. if you look at the petstores, you can often find fake eggs to replace real ones. but i wouldnt worry about it unless the real eggs get stinky. lol

good luck jesse!!
