 Sun Conure Question

well im pretty sure i know whats going on, but i would like some opinions.

my sun conure turned 2 yrs old on june 16th this year. i believe she is showing signs. she has to be bribed out of her cage now. i can hold my hand by her and tell her to step up, but she fluffs her head, and bobs like the babies do when they want to be fed. she has also been noiser than normal lately to. my green cheek is in season as well, but shes 3, and i know her signs. this is new with my sun. sound like breeding behavior to anyone else?

thanks!

 Sun Conure Question

Bopping the head is normal for sun conures & it’s a happy thing. They reach maturity about 3 years old & as for the loudness, well you need to look into other possible reasons why your is suddenly screaming.

My sunnie conures screams are a little worse in spring but only because of the cockatoos flying over the area. Apart from that she is quiet.

Sunnies are a needy bird. there is so much they will put up with before they get fed up & can scream as a result. It’s also possible for them to learn to scream as a way of getting attention, even if the attention is scolding, to them that’s attention. Also look into the diet. An incorrect diet or slight imbalance can turn some birds into screamers.

If she doesn’t want to come out of the cage, then does she have to? My sunnie also has her moments of not wanting to come out. If she doesn’t I leave her & see if she’s ready to come out a few minutes later. Usually she is. If your sunnie is cage territorial then coax her out to the opening of the cage before picking her up. Sunnies are cage territorial, particularly through hormonal times & shouldn’t have to deal with an intruding hand in their space.

Sexual maturity can be seen in some sunnies, not in others. My girl is 7 years old & has never shown ’signs’ of being hormonal. She’s quite calm & lovely to have year round.

If it is the start of hormones for her just remember she isn’t aware of what she’s doing is wrong & can’t prevent it so using any means of punishment will just confuse her & make her worse.
