4 week old Amazon Tree boa won’t eat?

We’ve had this little girl for a week and a half now. The pet store said she ate a fuzzy mouse (2 inches long) on Thursday Feb. 28th. We got her Friday the 29th. I find it hard to believe that she ate a fuzzy for two reasons. 1. She is as thick as a pencil and about 2 feet long, which is normal. But I can’t see how she could eat a 2 inch mouse. And 2. even is she did, seeing her a day afterwards shouldn’t we have seen a lump in her belly?

Anyways, we’ve tried to feed her a pinkie, live and dead, and she won’t eat. I know that some snakes take awhile to eat after a new cage/owner.

Any ideas on what we can do to get her to eat?

How long can she go without eating? When should I get worried?

Are you turning off all heating equipment when attempting to feed? Are all lights out? The food item needs to be the hottest thing in the environment for them to key on it, until they get used to food.

4 week old Amazon Tree boa won’t eat?

We’ve tried feeding her in a bag, (no heat or light) she won’t go for it. We’ve tried in a empty cage. My husband has tried to use tongs to try to hold it in front of her, we’ve tried heating up the dead mouse, and made the live one wiggle.

I read on one information sheet on here, to make it smell like a lizard. Any idea on what I am suppose to do to make it smell that way? Do I just ask the pet store to rub the dead mouse on a lizard? And if so, what type of lizard?

Should we keep trying dead mice or live mice?

Thanks for helping.

A few tips.

1: Try and tap the snake on the tail a few times with the mouse. Keep doing it until the snake either tries to get away, or grabs the mouse.

2: Get the mouse extremely hot with hot water and feed with lights completely out off tongs. Do not try and bag the snake. This really does not work with amazons.

3: Try to scent the rodent with bird feathers. Baby chickens seem to work the best.

4: It should not be as thin as a pencil at 2 ft, but they can certainly take down good sized mice. My TINY babies are already eating hoppers and they are only a few months old.

5: Don’t be too alarmed as long as the snake is well hydrated. I had a baby go without eating more than 2 months after birth and it was only 20g when it was born. If a tiny snake like that can go that long without food...your snake will be fine. However, if it is really that thin it might have gone much longer already. Can you see bone definition?

Honestly, if the snake dies, it was likely a WC animal that was not healthy anyway. That’s why true cbb animals from a reliable source are worth more than their weight in gold. I know numerous people who will never consider a WC animal after having dealt with problems.

Good luck!

Thanks for the tips, we will have to try them.

She is a bit bigger towards the middle, but about as thin as a pencil by her neck. I will post a picture.

The pet store said that she is wild bred. Her parents were wild, but she was not? She is the first generation of wild bred?

Based on the picture, would fuzzies be the right size? Or are we right to try pinkies?

Bagging and "boxing" does not usually work with amazons.

Your snake is what they call "Captive Born." This is not as bad as wild caught, but there can still be issues. WIth lots of snakes, these babies do not normally do well. Also, with live bearing snakes, there is a slight possibility that parasites are transferred to the babies.

Your snake looks really pretty, and it can easily take hoppers.

Not to sound stupid, but is a hopper the next size after a fuzzy? I know pinkies are the new born mice, then fuzzy ones are the next step up...(about two inches long, and maybe an inch around)

We are going to try a live fuzzy next. We’ve been trying live and dead pinkies. Maybe she wants something bigger.

How often should we TRY to feed her? We’ve been trying for the past three nights, then before that a week ago once.

On a sort of funny note, we found out she doesn’t like to bag eat, because she bit my husband. 1st and only time. He went to take her out of the bag, and I think he spooked her. Now my 3 1/2 month old BP likes to eat in a bag. I’ve had a lot of people tell me to feed her in her cage, (I’ve only had her 2 weeks, and she has ate for me twice in a bag), but she seems to do alright with it. She eats within 10 minutes, then pops her head out when she’s done.

Have a good day.

lol, it might have been the first time your amazon tree boa bit your husband...but it will not be the last time. If your snake is not trying to bite you regularly, that right there could be a sign of a health issue.

Hopper is the name for fully haired small mice. Yes, the step up from fuzzies. Any small fully haired mouse will work. They can be bigger than you would imagine that neck can stretch to.

Another quick note: I would not be handling this snake in the meantime and I would try to offer food ever 4-10 days late at night with only about enough light in the room for you to see.

HaHa SoLA when I saw the pic of her holding it and it wasn’t biting the snot out of her... I was thinking the same thing... but I don’t have one so I wasn’t going to comment... but since you did.. I feel safe just agreeing... I’ve never had an ATB but I’ve been in contact with them... and they struck at anything that moved..especially the baby ones.

So, sense she doesn’t bite, does that mean she’s sick? Couldn’t it just mean that she’s a sweetheart? Or calm? We held her brother, the day we bought her, and he didn’t bite either?

If the ATB is not aggressive there might be a problem. If it is not feeling well and when you finally get it eating and it starts feeling better, you might get suprised when it bites you.
My ATB has not been eating either. He’s been killing...but not eating. I have had him for 4 months, this will be his first shed. and it is not going good. Very slow, no sense of urgency (as far as getting the old skin off, just off the face pretty much). But still agressive and alert. I recommend being patient; make sure the cage is clean and LEave it alone. Stop holding it and looking at it.
I know that is hard to do, trust me. But ATB’s are very nervous snakes (whichis why they are agressive) and he may be refusing food because he just wants to get adjusted to his new home.

We are trying a fuzzy mouse tonight, dead. If it doesn’t work, we will try a live one. Hubby isn’t happy about not being able to hold the snake (Saphira) but he is willing to leave her alone if that could make her eat. Thanks, and have a good day.
