I do know a couple people that have fed drumsticks with success. but what they did is rather than feeding several large rats to their large snakes, they would feed 2-3 drumsticks then a large ( or whatever size was appropriate ) rat. im not sure if they still do this though, but it was a success for at least sometime. but just get rats. |

Elvia... did he say that he couldn’t afford the rats? I understood there to be a problem with his rat supply.. he is not in the US where he can run out to petco and buy a rat. |

I’m not "IN" the US But Alaska is part of it, we only have ONE! pet store here so that’s why everyone desides to buy from the Net. But NO you cant feed anything from the "Human" Store to a snake Elvia. |

I wouldn’t be so quick to say that. Whole food items can be found in human food stores. Whole chicken for example or quail not every food store is Publix or Albertsons. Salmonella is not the issue, although people are making it an issue(why?). The issue is whole prey items, they need all those nasty guts to get nutrients from. I would imagine finding whole food items at markets would be even easier in South Africa although I don’t know where the OP lives or how large the snake is. I would rather feed my boa a few drumsticks instead of nothing while i was unable to get rodents for months at a time. I would try to go to a market(not grocery store)that sells foul and see if you cant get your hands on some small birds. |

Remember snakes are opportunist feeders. They may go a while without food. Forget drumsticks, grocery stores etc. Make it your mission to get hold of proper food for your snakes. I don’t ever recall seeing a snake catching a chicken drumstick in the wild, or popping to the grocers to buy its food. Good old rats, thats what they want. Prevent any problems in the future by sticking to their regular diet. The last thing you want is a snake going off its rats etc, because it takes a shine to a drumstick. Personally, i wouldn’t and I wouldn’t leave it a few months without getting rats I’d rather make it my goal to get his proper diet. If you’ve ever read a book about boa constrictors by Vincent Russo (an established Boa keeper and breeder). He will tell you that a snake going without food for a while will grow a lot quicker and become more muscular making it a better breeder. |

At this point I would suggest feeding less often. |

Once again.. let us know how things turned out.. and I also agree with what the other post said.. depending on the size of the snake... there HAS to be some sort of WHOLE food item in your market... doesn’t have to be rodents. In my boa book it mentions (pge 34) that juvenile boas MAY consume rodents, lizards, frogs, other small mammals, chicken and other fowl. Now I’m really interested to see how this turns out... good luck! |

Before you insist on making a patheitc attempt of being insulting, read the posts yourself first. In your post, you mentioned it’s been 4 weeks that you’ve been trying to get hold of food for your snakes. If you notice in my written ENGLISH post, you will see that I have covered your issue by stating that they can go a while without food. 4 weeks is nothing. If you have the ability to get online to submit posts, you obviously have the ability to order food (as already mentioned by another person on here). If you have a local breeder, haven’t you considered asking him where and how often he gets his food, so you can do a joint order? Also, ordering enough food to last them and then having forethought to order more for them, when they are about three or so weeks from having none? If you only create a post expecting to hear what you want to hear, then whats the point of asking for others opinions. If getting food for your snake is that much of an issue, then maybe you should consider owning a pet, which you can provide for. Just simply trying to reassure you that a few weeks is fine without food, but obviously not what you wanted to hear. |

First off the man is IN SOUTH AFRICA!!! Second , At first i just thought you were being rude because you got some beef with me(get over it already, I’m hardly ever here anyway) but it seams that your postings here are just plain confrontational, I would hope that you will take a step back and be a little nicer. It is this kind of unnessesary flaming that has brought this site’s activity down, no one want to come and ask for advise because they don’t want to be attacked and insulted as you are doing here. In case you missed it. Quote: I always buy my rats at a private snake breeder but there seem to be a shortage of rats in the western cape because he tried to get rats in Cape town for me without success. The petshops around here doesnt have rats. There arent any rat companies like rodentpro in south africa that I know of.Seriously im trying my best to get rats |

Yeah AND?? Africa is huge. You telling me that there isn’t ANYWHERE to get food for your snake in Africa within a few weeks? If the guy making this post can’t get the food locally, i’m sure he has got the means and know how to go further a field and look. If he can’t, then I simpathise with him. Quote: it seams that your postings here are just plain confrontational
So where is the confrontational part in my first post on here? It’s in my opinion, as your’s is in your opinion. Quote: attacked and insulted as you are doing here
Did you tell these guys the same... Quote: Florida boy, you don’t even deserve to be the owner of any snake! The heat lamp has a guard over it. I have read some pretty foolish and pathetic comments and/or advice from you!

Your right man, I’ve been on this forum for a few years now. Everytime I check a thread, there’s Florida boy chimming in and giving his 2cents. I wouldn’t take his advice for 1cent. This Florida Boy kid, seems to have written the book on every thing there is to know about boas. I think he better go back and read a few before he comments anymore on anybodys thread. Peace Ralph You said it yourself... Quote: Florida boy

Man you really got a stiffy for me huh? That post from Ralph is a joke. We’re forum friends, infact, he sent me a PM letting me know I was being bad mouthed cause the guy didn’t like my advise and he said he was going to have some fun with them. Besides It was obviously sarcastic. Actually I think where you quoted me, I was replying to that member complimenting me on my knowledge and advise. Your the one who found the thread to begin with so why don’t you go prove me wrong. Quote: Florida boy, you don’t even deserve to be the owner of any snake! The heat lamp has a guard over it. This one is from a thread where a member put togeather a flimsy (bad) cage and was touting it as the best thing for beginners and advanced boa keepers alike. I may have been a little short in my comments, and perhaps overly critical in regards to a couple points, but if you follow through, a couple well respected keepers(breeders, hobbiest breeders) came along and agreed the cage was bad. If you follow through more you will find this person trashed these cages and bought profesional caging. I understand his fustration , no one likes having something they made and think is great being put down and having all of it’s flaws being pointed out, even if that person is right. This will be my last commnets on this subject. |
