 Possible adoptiong-help please?

hey everyone! haven’t been on in awhile, let alone in the boa forums, but i have some quick questions. well, i was thinking about adopting a boa from the mid-michigan reptile rescue, but i wanted to know some things about them before. i’ve done lots of research now, but wanna get my facts set in stone so i’ll be ready. what size enclosure would i need for a male juvi? what’s the personalities; aggressive? hissing? just in a quick sum-up, because i know not all have the same personalities, but just in general terms.

thanks everyone for reading, and i’ll be looking forward to some answers soon!

Eventually you will need a 4X2 cage at least(aquariums with screen tops are not good cage choice) so know a male BCI can reach 8 to 9 feet long and weigh over 50lbs. Generally they are docile, but they all have moments where they want to be left alone and they will let you know. They will and do bite with careful deliberate handeling, an occasion of actually being bitten are pretty rare.
Read this, and make sure you want to take on this responsability

They’re back open again eh? They pulled all of their ads a few months ago from petfinder.com, with no reason why.

I’m not too sure on that rescue group... as I tried to contact them multiple times when I was looking for my first snake, and they never responded. Not even once...

Honestly, if you’ve never had a boa, I wouldn’t really suggest getting a full grown one like they have at the shelter. A lot of their animals are special needs, and I’ve even read that they wont adopt out large constrictors to anyone with no experience.

Sorry to be such a downer, but I would really recommend buying from a breeder in this case. Taking on an adult boa is a pretty big deal requiring some minimal experience.

But again, I may reading your post wrong in some way. I’m all for rescuing animals.

Yea... if your only 14, they wont adopt that animal to you, at least they shouldnt according to their site. I don’t think it’s quite right for a minor to adopt large snakes with no prior experience and no word on how mom and dad think about it.

Sorry, but it sucks being a kid.

i know what your all saying, and i’m 15 (not that that changes much, ^_^) i contacted them too, without any answer at all, so i may have to get one from a breeder, and my mom said it was alright too. i’ve owned Reptiles for 10 years, but have had minimal experience with large burmese pythons. my aunt used to have them, and so i got to hang with them. they’re very cool, but a smaller boa would be more of something for me. i truly believe i can handle a larger snake. i own a 4-foot argentine tegu as it is, and when she’s i a bad mood, it’s not pretty...lol...but i am awesome at picking up on their moods (just ask glowinggecko123). if i do end up getting one though, it would either be a small male, or a baby/ juvenile. i am aware of their size and caging requirments, and on how to handle a situation (if ever any occured), and am very keen with moods. i’ve never been bitten by any of my herps before (that’s not to say none have ever tried...lol).

sorry for the huge post, i just don’t want to get the wrong message accross and have ppl thinking i have no clue what i’m getting myself into. i am experienced, no doubt ^_^

thanks for answering and worrying about my safety with the larger constrictors, too.

Good, it sounds like you really trying to learn as much as you can. You don’t see that too often with teenagers. Kudos!

I only recommended against adopting an adult boa right off the bat, because of the probability that you would get a locality that does get pretty big. And if you were to get a female, she can grow to 8+ feet. I don’t know if you’ve ever tangled with a mad 4 footer, but they are extremely strong for their size, best to have two people around for the 8’ ones.

This is a photo from another forum of a big girl. She’s sweet, but imagine this wrapped around you... It aint coming off unless it wants too. ;)

Thats pure muscle they’re using, and although you would think one person can handle it, one false move and you can be hurt pretty quick. I say, get the baby, you’ll not only get all the experience you need dealing with a young one, but you two will quickly become attached to each other.

Boas can be such sweet puppy dog faces, and it’s always nice to see a well adjusted one with their owner. ;)

thanks, lol. just wanted to get the point across without people automatically assuming that i have no clue what i’m doing. and thanks for all the information and the pic was awesome! she’s a biggy, huh? i definately wouldn’t want that on me, considering i’m only around 5’ 4". i’m pretty small, but i could handle it. does anyone here have an account on reptilegeeks? we’re discussing it there, too. i’m Cyphon-Snipe there, so if you do and you get a chance, look for me and we can discuss it further!

a baby male is what i’m aiming for, both for reason’s of handleing difficulties (easier because they’re generally smaller than females), and space requirments. people often look at large constrictors and say to me, "that? you want one of those? it’s fat!!!" but that’s not the truth at all. what they’re marking as "fat" is actually hard-as-a-rock muscle that could probably crush all the bones in your body if you got on their bad side. that’s what i understand about these snakes! luckily i’m very good with picking up on attitudes or not, having many kings snakes over the years. it’s something you HAVE TO HAVE, especially with kings, only because they’re almost unpredictable. also, large lizards like iguanas or tegu.

thanks for all the help! keep it coming, i’m having a blast discussing this topic with all of you!

LOL, sounds great! If you ever attend the michigan reptile expo in Taylor next to Detroit. Make a thread about it. I love to meet up with people down there, and maybe I could persuade you towards a few vendors that I’ve bought from. ;)

lmao, sure, haha. don’t think i’ll be down there anytime soon, but sounds fun! wish i could go, but i live in Massachusettes, so it’s really far, sadly **cries in corner** i’m looking around now for a better place to get a boa from, and so far it’s looking like maybe an online breeder, or my local petco (which i hate for many reasons). the only thing is that petco is notorious for mite-infestations, and many other problems with reptiles.
