 Question about boa bites.

Hello,

I was feeding my 6ft male the other day, and I forgot to use forescepts... So I threw the rat in, and he striked at it, but missed. So I went to pick it up and he striked at my hand, thinking it was a rat. All the teeth sank in OUCH that really hurt, and wow the amount of blood shocked me, i ruined a couple of towels with the amount.
But I got some souvenirs, I pulled two teeth out from my hand =p

But anyways, my dad forced me to the doctors, saying "you’ll get gangrene" and I really doubt you’d get it, but he sent me anyway.
The doctor gave me some anti-biotics, my question is, is this really necessary? It’s been 3-4 days now and you can’t even make out the marks.

Thanks

Here’s a pic of the bite (sorry for bad quality)

I’ll try not to comment on the stupidity of putting your hand in the enclosure during feeding...

I haven’t been bitten by a boa over 5 feet but, once I get the bleeding to stop, I swabbed my hand with hydrogen peroxide. If possible I swabbed the snakes mouth with diluted peroxide (they can get germs from biting you).

Then I just keep an eye on the bitten area to see if any signs of infection appear. I’ve never had to worry so far. And I keep an eye on the snake to make sure it doesn’t show signs of catching anything from me.

Yeah it was really stupid... I must admit, and I know the fault goes completely to me. But my dads freaking out saying "you’ll get gangrene and your hand will have to be amputated" that just annoys me when he says it, because they’re not exactly dirty animals.

And no sign of infection at all tbh, you can bearly make out the markings now. My biggest worry now, is that i did snap off two-three teeth, will that effect him much?

Cheers,

 Question about boa bites.

When I was a kiddo, and after petting our pet rabbits, snuck into our snake cage to pet the snakes ( I was 8- parents were busy doing ...something who knows...) I knew I wasnt allowed in...9 foot female was in shed...and hadnt been fed in a couple weeks, and she struck and let go. It bled a little but not all that much. Did get one tooth in my hand. Snake was fine. I washed it really well and put peroxide on it. Mom came in while I was cleaning up (I had my first aid badge already. Ha!) and after that the snake cage had a lock and I was grounded for two weeks.

I really, honestly don’t know anyone who has gotten gangrene from a snake bite. It could happen I s’pose if you don’t wash it- or were to go mucking about in sewage water before its healed or something...or perhaps if someone had an immune deficiency and the snake had salmonella MAYBE. But if you keep your tanks clean, you should be fine. Watch your snakes mouth for signs of infection in the gums where it lost teeth. More en likely everything will be ok.
My doc wouldn’t prescribe antibiotics without sign of infection. But then again, I wouldn’t have a parent there freakin’ out ...

If you’re under 18...appease the parental unit. Is just easier. Trust me.

LOL I gathered... They don’t half make a fuss over nothing, my dad thought it was venomous and wanted to "suck out the venom" I tried to assure him that it is indeed a boa constrictor and not some kind of rattle snake... But he still thought "no.. it’s a snake... it’s poisonous.. you’re gonna die..."
So I just had to kind of wash it behind a locked bathroom door, as if he would indeed try to "suck out the venom" I’m sure child protection services wouldn’t be too happy to see that kind of sight.

But yeah I used some antiseptic cream, and I’ve not been swimming around in sewage lately, so I’m sure it’ll be fine lol =p
The snake tank is pretty clean, I think my house cleaner has OCD or something and she always keeps straightening out the news paper and stuff, and replaces it if it’s a little dirty... Gosh England is a crazy country.

Cheers!

 Question about boa bites.

My first concern was for the poor snake who lost some teeth! LOL!

Quote:

Snake teeth are both acrodont (attached to the bone) and polyphydont (able to grow back when lost), and a snake may have several sets of teeth throughout its lifetime. This is necessary, because teeth are often lost while feeding.

I wish my teeth were polyphydont!

Okay wow. Call me a coward but I’m really new to the snake owner thing and the idea of "swabbing the snake’s mouth" after being bitten seems like kind of a feat. First of all, aren’t they a bit opposed to being swabbed in the first place? How would one go about approaching a snake who just struck you?

Like Dargonwulf said, ’very carefully’. I didn’t say that it was easy :)

Sometimes you have to wait for them to calm down a little. Putting on gloves helps. I keep a snake hook handy...some boas stop striking once they lose their leverage. Once you get control of the head, then it’s not a problem.

Wow, I wish I had a house keeper willing to go in and clean up my snakes tank!!! Hahaha
Heck...Id settle for just having a house keeper.

Old post, but still amuses me. That poor dad. I hope he has learned more about snakes since then.
