 Breathing: (same problem with ball?)

Just want to check real quick, I got a new adult boa constrictor (possibly a red tail?) and as with my ball python, he is in shed, as has audible breather, its a bit louder than the baby ball, I’d imagine since hes a 6’ snake. I also thought it may be getting some water stuck in his nostrils, as well as shed, as he wasn’t doing it before I gave him a bath.

Although he seems healthy, his previous owners didn’t use a heat lamp, or pad, they simply left him in front of the window. If it was a serious problem, I doubt he would have lived this long. I just want to know what to look for should it be a serious respiratory problem, or something that requires a vet.

Hearing them breathing at all, unless its just a hiss when they dont want to be picked up, is a sign of a respiratory infection. A vet check and antibiotics are warrented. With boas, RIs get pretty serious pretty fast.

Make sure you have it in proper conditions and proper heating first off. Gone untreated it will go into pneumonia- and be much harder and more expensive to treat. The earlier you catch it, the better.

The first thing I assumed was respiratory infection, I’m going to take him to the vet tomorrow morning, but after looking in his nostrils with a flashlight, he does appear to have some loose scales in the way, and he isn’t showing any other signs of infecting.

Best of luck! Would love to see pictures once they are settled in and have had time to relax under better conditions than their previous owner had them in.
Im glad they were willing to give em up to someone who takes the time to research and follow whats needed to care for them properly.

I appreciate it, I’ll take some pics as soon as I get a good camera to borrow. I didn’t have anything against the previous owners, they did get a proper sized cage for him, and whatever they did, he seems to be doing fairly well considering he’s as big as he is. He definetly needs to shed in the next few days.

yeah, it is a learning process and you dont always get the right information when you get a snake on its care. I looked into alot with my last boa, no care sheet I got told me about humidity...etc...though that was years and years ago.

The snakes I have now are so much healthier for having proper care. Its amazing to see the rainbowy glow of their skin rather than dry skin, and to see them more active.
