 Feeding question

Just a quick question, I have had Loki, my CA Red Tail for about 4 months now, and I have always fed her 1 a week, every Sunday. She just came out of shed yesterday and I asked a friend of mine if I should feed her right away, since she missed last Sundays feeding due to shed, or just wait till Sunday, her normal day. After telling me either way didn’t matter, he told me that I should feed her twice a week. Now everything that I have ever read or been told, tells me that this is bad and can cause health issues and shortened lifespan. However, he keeps several snakes and even breeds them, and has never had any issues. Any suggestions?

 Feeding question

Boas are not high energy snakes (such as bullsnakes, indigos, etc....) They don’t need to feed on a set schedule. They wouldn’t in the wild. A schedule for feeding is more for the keeper’s convenience. They can miss a meal, actually it’s a good idea to make them miss a meal every once and a while.

Boas do not need to be fed more than once a week unless they are very emaciated and in ill health.

Overfeeding is a bigger issue in captivity although underfeeding to "keep them small" is occurring more and more.

You should be able to feed a baby or juvenile boa one appropriately sized meal every 7-10 days.

As they get older you can stretch out the feedings more. One good meal every 14 days is good for sub adults.

Adult C.A.s can be fed every three weeks without any problems.

Unless the boa is showing signs of underfeeding/starvation, or obesity, in which case the feeding schedule can be modified accordingly.

Amie
