Need help with lighting id go with your standard reptibulbs wattage will depend on the size od the tank and how ventilated it is bigger tanks will need more wattage its that simple. Find your temps thru a simple trial and error proccess

Need help with lighting Ill tell u what i use for my BP, i have a 45 half screen half glass top, i use a standard 75 watt bulb and cover the screen up and vent once inawhile as i watch the temp and humidity here is an idea. I will be using the same set up for my boa when it gets older and in a bigger cage, but for her(boa) i have her in a 10 with a full velcroed screen top and the light off to the side and cover on top venting also. here is my BP set up..

Need help with lighting I suggest you do what Diggy said. If you don’t try to use a standard lightbulb (60 or 75 watt), then you can go with the big halogen lights, but only about 45 watts. It really depends on the size of your tank. What you can do, if you have a stand for your light like I do is get a 75 watt standard lightbulb and if you see that it is too hot, then just move the bulb a little farther away from the cage. Just keep doing that until you have it set on the temp you like best. Here is the kind of stand I am talking about...

I have it close to the tank, but it doesn’t have to be. The neck of the stand is bendable so you just adjust it to be however close or far you need it from the cage. I hope this helps Stephen

DONT use lights..... i would suggest going with Heat pads for your heat source. They wont dry out the cage as light bulbs do, heat better and more evenly, and help digestion. if you want to light the cage use a simple flourescent bulb.

DONT use lights..... any heat sourse will cause evaporation, its a matter of creating ventilation on the bottom of the cage, so as not to lose the moisture, just makes it way easier

Not as much as a bulb....... No heat source will cause as much evaporation as using a CHE or light bulb will. Othe heat sources heat the air byfirst heating the objects, then the air. Light bulbs heat the air thereby taking all the humidity and bringing it up to the top of the cage where your snake wont spend much time. Even if you have ventilation at the bottom of the cage and are heating with lights. You will have a dry bottom and a steadily increasing humidity at the top.

Not as much as a bulb....... somewhat true but to such a small extent. its been my experience that any heat source will dry your substrate in a matter of days when using a screen top

Not as much as a bulb....... He is right...a CHE dries the air out a ton and if you use a heat pad or tape you can cover the majority of the screen top with plastic and leave about an inch or 2 on both sides for ventalation...if you use a bulb...do not use it as your primary heat source and i would just use any normal house bulb to provide a day/night cycle. it may add a little more heat for the day and will not dry out the air as much as the more intense reflective bulbs.

Not as much as a bulb.......
spot lights are ideal... heat pad dont distribute heat well like a spot light.. the best way to do it is as such... ok, 55 gallon tank.. screen top.. if you want ur snake to have great coloring and be a good temp..i would never use a house hold bulb.. doesnt have enough heat out put like a spotlight..and a spot light will generate heat in one spot, thats why its called a spot light.. leaving the rest of the cage/aquarium to cool off if it gets to hot.. heating pads depending on size doesnt do well.. its either to cold or too hot.. and as far as dryness goes heat is heat water evaporates period.. mist the tank evey one to 2 days..use a cyprus mulch...not cedar!.. cedar harbors and produces more bacteria and parasites than any other substrate.. pine also.. i have a combination of heat/uv-uvb lighting for my boas/other snakes and reptiles.. the uvb rays make for a beautiful coloring and a healthier snake.now uvb is not required but thats what they get in the wild by basking upder the sun.. being in cages even aquariums the glass filters out uv and uvb rays.. ventalation is correct. if to much it will dry out real quick in there.get sum pretty thick plastic and cover 3/4 of the screen with it.. the heat/uv-uvb bulb is better actually inside the cage.i would take messurements of the top of the aquarium from the inside lips and go to home depot buy a sheat of peg bored," a good thickness" and have them cut it for ya.. get a all ceramic light fixture no plastic and a replacement power cord and run the cord through one of the holes and hook it up.. make sure the fixture is in the tank and get a sun power heat/uv-uvb bulb they run alil xspensive or go to ebay.com and put reptile uvb in search..get all kinds ..make sure they have uv-uvb output.. some of these peoples posts have sum good advise but not all are correct about heat pads are the best.. believe me.. any more questions email me at critters2004@msn.com or just throw up a post..
