This is eating season, not breeding season. Cooler temps and less food help to induce breeding, but this is not the time, wait till fall of winter.

well i thought red tails could breed anytime of the year. but if you’re saying its feeding season and cooler temps about how much should they be eating? ive been giving them like 1 large rat evry week or two but i know they want more. my female has been eating 4 or 5 lbs rabbits but i cut her back cuz she was getting over weight. and what is the best time to slow down feeding and cool down the temp? i’ve been reading every article about boas i can find about breeding and it seems like everyone is saying something different, so if someone want s to give me some advice it would be really helpful thank you.

They can breed any time of the year but it is technically breeding season in the fall and winter and eating season the rest of the time. It just make sence to me to keep them warm and feeding during the spring and summer and keeping them cooler during the winter. You can yeild results many different ways. I am new at this and haven’t produced a single clutch, but I have a good understanding of the proccess. Checkout theboaphile.com and read his article/site. Lots of good info, spend some time in the information sections of the bigger breeders, you may not learn everything but you will learn alot.

Feed them what they should be eating. Unless you have her crammed in a small bow, I wouldn’t worry about her getting overweight.

ok thanks ill be sure to let you know if anything happens, and all of the stuff on boaphile really helped. i actually have her in a 40g breeder it just looks crammed with the male in there do you think that is appropriate size? also about what time do are you going to introduce your male to the female?

OK, if your female is really able to take down 4lb rabbits then she must be around 30 lbs. I’m guessing she is what 7 feet long?more?? 40 breeder is 4.5 square feet. That is way, way, way too small, has been for a while now. That female really needs to be in a 5X2X2, at the very least a 4X2X1 (LxWxH). She needs a bigger cage now, as in ASAP. The best direction I can point you is to order a plastic cage from either reptilebasics.com or animalplastics.com. reptile basics will get it to you quick, couple weeks max. I’m nopt going to beat you up over it but, minimum cage size standard is 1sqf per lineal foot of boa. That means when your boa hit lets say 5 feet and started getting thick, that cage was too small. Now that she is able to eat rabbits, 4lbs no less, she should be afforded appropriate caging. Proper heat and humidity is also important(why I recommend buying plastic cage). once a boa is 7 feet, 8 square feet is starting to get a bit cramped, thus why i recommed the 5X2 and the extra foot of height will make it easier to get her out.

as far as when I will start to introduce my males to my females, last year I went october 1. I think it was too soon, and by the time my female was ready to ovulate, her energy stores had been used up too much, so she reobsored her follicles(thats my thinking at least, theory if you will). This year i will introduce my males to my females probably Dec 1.

ok well she is about 6 and 12 feet but she only ways 18 pounds. i got her about 4 years ago when she was 5 weeks old or something like that she was about 16 inches. anway she still fits comfortably in her tank and the tank is 40g breeder and is 4x2x2 so im a little confused about

anyway thanks for the advice but i am going to keep her in that till breeding time then i was going to go plastic. what kind of heat source can you use on plastic? cause right now i use the sticky heat wave pads that go under the tank they seem to work really good on glass aquariums.

40 gallon breeder is not 4X2X2. a 40 gallon breeder is 36"X18"X18". That is only 4.5 feet. You need a bigger cage. I have my female 6 and a half footer in a 4X2X1 and she is already starting to look cramped and i don’t think she is much more than 12lbs. Pehaps we are just confused about what eachother are saying but, 4.5sqf is not enough room for a 6’+ female boa, no mater how you cut it. Now IF she is in a 4X2X2 then that is cool but if she is in a 40 breeder she is not comfortable, by any strech of the imagination.

Most people use flexwatt run on thermostats, stuck to the bottom or backs of the cage with foil tape. The pads you are talking about are way over priced.

judging by the picture, the width of that tank is not 2 foot, so im guessing that it is a 40 gallon breeder. which is no where near the right sized tank for her. my two adult corns are in my 40 gallon breeder, and i wouldnt have them in anythin smaller. your snake can not get the excercise she needs in that tank, which is vital to stop her from getting egg bound and septicemia. which is what happened to one of my corns, luckily i diagnosed the problem in the early stages of septicemia, so i prevented it from getting worse.
not getting the exercise is a serious problem.
