Actually, there is one sand boa that does lay eggs. It looks just like a kenyan, but is called a mueller sand boa. This is the first year I have seen them imported, and I wouldn’t be surprised if some don’t end up being sold as kenyan sand boas

They are still trying to determine if the Muller’s Sand (Boa) is really a Boa at all...they are waiting for the reports from the biologist....they are trying to say that it may be a small python........!!

Being an egg-layer or live-bearer is one key element in determining whether a snake is a boa or python(livebearer=boa; egglayer=python)

Yes but take into consideration that there are snakes out there that are not boas and still give live birth to their young.

Agreed; but I’ve never heard of an egg-laying boa. It’s usually obvious whether a snake is a boid or not, and if a snake is a boid and lays eggs, my guess would be python.

Well actually. Yes they lay eggs, and the ltest news they are boids. I have been breeding kenyans 7 years. Also What noone knows it can go two ways, these kenyans can lay eggs, or have live birth, i had a imported pair 2 years ago one of the very first pairs, and they were mating like crazy then i noticed there were eggs in the age (3) to be exact! And then underneath the substrate there were 5 live young, now alot of ppl dont belive this but yes its true and its kind weird frankly i got out of the "saharan Sand boas" theyre very odd and complicated i belive myself, If you have any other questions email me on

Been breeding Kenyans 7 years.............................?????

I don’t think a boa passing infertile "eggs" really counts as "laying" "eggs".........

They give birth to live young, they don’t "lay" eggs...

those "Eggs" were most definatly unfertalized ova other wise know as slugs. Baby snakes take months to develop. With live babies you are looking at around 4 months(varys by sp.), for eggs you are looking at a month(vary by sp.) so how are you going to get eggs and live boas in the same litter. your not.

Here’s a line from Kingsnake.com on the Mueller’s Sand Boa, aka West African Sand Boa, aka Egg-laying Sand Boa:

"[Mueller’s Sand Boas have] recently been imported into the United States by Dave and Tracy Barker of VPI Pythons. They say these are docile creatures which are adjusting well to captivity. Hopefully this will lead to a captive population of this beautiful little sandboa. Due to the presence of these recently imported snakes in the US, we now have learned that this species (like E. jayakari) lays eggs. The eggs were laid very late in development and hatched within 14 days of being laid."

Mueller’s look pretty much like the Kenyan except they have the "hooked" tail.
