Eye and skin problems
First time posting here, but I met a BRB tonight that has really bad eyes. When the owner got him he had one "white" eye. His husbandry had been wrong, he had multiple old scars from inappropriate feeding, and this white eye. The owner tried to soak it off and says that it won’t come off. He thinks that somehow the snake was blinded previously, and this would be the equivalent of a cataract. And it looks like that as well. White, with a bit of blue hue to it. The problem is that now his other eye is doing the same thing. He has just shed and the owner says that both eyecaps came off with the head piece. Can he shed an old cap and retain the newer ones? Does the eye go through a specific change during a blinding? I was going to try and dab a drop of mineral oil on each eye to see if they loosen up a bit, but like I said, not sure this is retained caps. And further to this... the skin around his snout looks really funky. it has that pruny look that kids have when they get out of the tub, as well as being quite wrinkly. The owner says the same, his shed was complete (including heat pits and nostrils), but the best way to describe it is that the skin looks waterlogged... this sound familiar to anyone? He did suffer a striking injury a few months back hitting his nose against the side of the enclosure. But they didn’t think they were related. I understand everyone’s first urge is to say TAKE IT TO THE VET ASAP... and I agree, but if I can take some information as to what might be wrong, I think that will go along way in communicating the brevity of the situation. I was able to get some pics of the snake’s eyes and snout. Not the best quality, my camera doesn’t do so good with macro shots. But here they are with a brief description. This guy definitely needs vet care.
This eye looks distended, and like there is a pocket beneath the outer cap. The skin around it is OK looking, but the eye itself is quite distended. The point that looks like a pupil, up close looks more like fluid under the cap. Possible bacterial intection? I’ve heard that can happen with retained caps. Here’s the other eye...
This eyes looks harder and deeper set. Completely white like a cataract. You can also see the tip of the snout where there is brown skin, the consistency of new skin after a burn, on a human at least. And the edges where the skin extends to the snout is pulled back. The upper gums are showing, and are quite pink. Lastly one of the head and snout... again not very clear, but shows the overall look of the head.
The littler eye is the one closest to the camera... Obviously he needs to see a vet ASAP, the couple that owns him is back on Sunday night, but curious still if anyone can offer an advice or point to what might be going on with this poor guy. Thanks in advance, Bruce |
