 Sick Baby Girl...

I’m 99% sure that my little Brazilian Rainbow Boa has an upper respiratory infection. She’s been holed up in her cave since she last ate but I got her out a few minutes ago. While I was holding her she was making these odd whistling/crackling noises and she kept opening and closing her mouth. A bit of saliva bubbled out at one point and that’s when I knew I wasn’t mistaken. I’ve read about the symptoms before and she has them all. :(

I just raised the temperature of her cage to 95 degrees but now I’m afraid she’ll get too hot. I know that Rainbows can die pretty easily from overheating. I’ve had her for about a month and I’ve kept her temperatures in the 75-85 range. She’s also had plenty of humidity, but maybe it was too damp somehow? I was under the impression that it’s extremely difficult to provide too much humidity for these snakes. She’s always seemed content until this point so I’m not sure what happened.

Anyway, many of you have Rainbow Boas so how have you kept them from getting sick and/or cured them? I’ve kept many snakes for the last couple of years and I’ve never had this happen. Any tips?

Here are some pictures as well... I’m using cypress mulch and sphagum moss as substrate. The little cave in the pictures is full of damp sphagum moss. It holds humidity and heat extremely well and that’s where she is most of the time.

You shouldn’t have brb’s that hot,I wouldn’t go above 88 for any extended period of time.Get rid of that strip thermometer and get a digital indoor outdoor thermometer, those strip thermometers are very inaccurate. If all you are using is that strip thermometer your temps might be off and that could cause the RI.I would make a vet appointment and have the snake checked out.

Also you might want to place the thermometer lower so it’s closer to where the snake spends most of it’s time. Please go out tomorrow and get a good digital thermometer.

I actually have an extra digital one that I just haven’t set up yet. She’s only been in that cage for about a week; I had her in a plastic tub before. I’ll try to rig it up right now.

So I’ve been sitting here watching her on and off for the last couple of hours... I find it odd that she doesn’t act sick at all since I’ve put her up. She’s not making weird noises or having bubbly saliva or anything. Is it possible that she just doesn’t want to be held so she acts funny when I pick her up? LOL, I’m just totally confused. I’ve never had a snake do anything like this before. Please post if you have any ideas.

Well then just watch her for a few days and see how she is,if you still notice bubbles you should take a trip to the vets.Do you know how to open a snakes mouth?
