 Substrate

I’m going to buy some other substrate, something that will hold humidity better than aspen. BUT the last substrate i had was jungle earth and That had little bugs in it everywhere. Would Y’all mind telling me How to get rid of the little Buggers. I’m not comfortable having my snake on substrate knowing its Crawling with god only knows what. The aspen I’m using now Has no bugs in it at all but it don’t hold humidity very good.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The bugs are probably mites, they’re a common problem with high humidity. I had them when my boa was on aspen and again with wood chips. I’m also trying to find something that doesn’t harbour mites AND can cope with high humidity. Not meaning to hijack your thread but I’m also interested to see what people suggest.

Mites come from the outside. they dont just appear from the humidity. Coconut husk works well. Im using papertowel on my boa right now.....its easy to clean. you can just spray the tank down once or twice a day to keep humidity up. i can get my humidity at 90% by spraying it just once a day.

Reptile mites do not just appear from a humid environment, they would have to be introduced to the animal some how, they are host specific.Use whatever substrate works best for you,if you Don’t like one try another.
