They’re just nippy while they’re babies, right? And they mellow out as they get older?

I don’t want to get nipped by any snake! Big or small.

All snakes are nippy as babies because in nature...everything is trying to kill them at this young age.

Scylla is right....
and yes, BRBs usually tend to calm down as they age, if handled consistently. I’ve heard alot of things about how they can never be trusted, or how a few of them have "clicked" mentally and all of a sudden one day started flipping out. Personally, I think it’s individual snakes and how much interaction they have with their owners and on what grounds. And well, if you like snakes and don’t wanna get tagged, well heh I’d say you’re SOL. My first tag was from a BP, keep in mind these things are the world’s best predators.

Getting bit is a potential part of snake ownership! Period!

The same potential exists with dogs! I’ve been bit hard more times by my 2 dogs in "play" than I have ever been bit by snakes. But the potential is still there.

Some people over on the Ball Python forum don’t share some of my practices...but I have always and will always use a snake hook with every snake when I open their enclosure and get them out.

It’s a conditioning method that I have used for years and I would have to say it works because I have "Never" been struck at and bit!!!

After they’re out and on the hook...I generally put them in my hand right away. By then they know it isn’t strike-and-eat time...they know it’s holding time and they calm down immediately.

They I check them over and put them back by hand. Most have learned that "Hook" means I’m about to be held. Being held means I’m going to be put back soon. It’s conditioning.

Now opening their enclosure...removing their water bowl...and removing their hide...tells them that it’s feeding time and they act completely different. Again...conditioning!

I agree with using the hook, I think it is a very effective way of getting snakes out and used to handling, and like you said, conditioning. I know alot of snake keepers who do. I don’t use them, but if given the chance I would try it out.
