I just got a baby BRB female......

I’m new to the snake world and I have a few Questions.
How Long should I have the uvb light on? Is it okay if I take her out at night to handle her? She was breathing heavy at some points when I held her. Does that mean she is stressed?
Thanks for any input

Wow....
Okay, where should I start first?
You don’t need a UVB light with any snake. NO LIGHTS AT ALL. UTH, with a thermostat, or dimmer, and that’s IT.
Yes, she’s breathing heavy because you’re stressing the smarty pants out of her.
Leave her alone for a week! Let her get used to her cage.
Handle her at 2-3 a week MAX for no more than ten minutes at a time. Don’t handle her two days after feeding, or else she’ll puke.
What are your temps/humidity??
What size cage do you have her in?
Why did you get a snake without researching it first??!?!

i think the best thing to do is take her back and get a different snake before she dies or ends up with healths probs.

it is obvious you are not prepared for this type of snake.

I agree, except with the whole "getting another snake" thing!

You do NOT need any snake right now until you have researched on your own about them!
Save us all the time and misery and bring that BRB back. When you’re ready to make a mature decision on when you’re ready or not to get another snake (not a BRB), come back to us, and we’ll be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

Dani...This is the only good path to proper snake ownership...

1) Determine how much time you can devote to care and decide how much you really need to handle a snake.

2) Read and research a lot. Find out what snake best fits you!

3) After deciding which species to own...Read and research a lot more to determine if you can properly care, house, heat and feed it properly.

4) Set up it’s enclosure...Get all the temps and humidity perfect.

5) NOW you can go buy the snake!!!

6) Put the snake in it’s new enclosure and leave it alone for a week.

7) Offer it food after a week. If it eats...you can handle it 48-hours later.

==============================

Anything less than this is a bad start!

And buying a snake and THEN asking how to care for it is irresponsible!

Thank you for the input. My friend has 8 snakes and I’ve always liked them. I didn’t know much about this kind of snake but, I fell in love with her when I saw her!!! She is in a 10 gallon tank and there is aspen mulch on the bottom and a branch and two hididng spots-one on the cold side of the tank and one above the heating pad. I don’t have a temp/hum. reading as of yet-still have to get the gages.

I don’t think they were trying to be rude by any means BRB’s require a lot and I think a lot of us can agree no matter the snake a lot of people jump into it without really researching, and a lot of people get frustrated when they hear the same questions over and over and especially when someone hasn’t done the research prior to ownership. Your age plays no factor in what they are telling you and if anything as an ADULT you would think you would have read up on everything before acquiring. They are amazing and beautiful snakes I own 2 and I still read and learn more everyday, I wish the best of luck to you and your BRB and keep reading and researching it will pay off in the end for you and will benefit your BRB a lot as well.

hmm ya it is, but sometimes what alot of people do (mostly when they are young) is have something like a plastic cup with wet moss in it and put it say like over the heat pad, instead of making the whole cage like that, i hope thats what shes doing, cause if not....

I (and we) were not being "Rude"...simply direct and to the point.

We obviously want you to have a good reptile ownership experience...and (more importantly) we want the snakes care to be correct of of top priority.

If you thought my step-by-step process (as listed in the above post of mine) was "Rude"...What I’m about to say should sound like "Verbal Murder"...

You may be a "grown" adult biologically speaking...but what you’ve shown us so far is that you’re immature and not too bright!

A mature and intelligent adult would not have bought an animal (especially with their 1st snake NOT being a beginner species) without doing EXTENSIVE reading AHEAD OF TIME!!! You should have asked all of these care and enclosure questions BEFORE you made the purchase!!!

Saying "Well he’s doing fine and eating fine." is just a stupid retort to us pointing out bad care on your part!!!

This species has VERY specific heating and humidity requirements!!! He may be alive and eating now...but being stupid and stubborn about your BRB’s care will lead to health issues and possibly his death.

And he DOESN’T need UVA or UVB lighting!!! This remark and your improper tank set-up tells us that you have no clue what you’re doing.

If you want help...Ask for it...Then thank the person who helped you...and follow their advice!

If you don’t want help...Don’t waste our time with your bad attitude!

=======================

There...Now that I got that out of my system.

Let us know if you’re serious about caring for your BRB and we will help.

Dani, I understand the hostility you’re feeling, but can you understand from OUR point of view, too?
We dedicate our LIVES to these snakes, we love them and it’s very, very dissappointing to see someone (not just you, countless others) going about and just "picking up" a snake because they like how they look. It’s frustrating for us that spent most of our waking moments looking after our guys, researching them, learning to care for them properly ect ect, when all some people do is pull out their wallets. Can you understand? I researched for MONTHS before I brought any of my snakes home, and we’re all the more better for it. I can understand where there is a problem, and how to correct it now because I gave myself that knowledge and experience. Trust me, it is not fun taking care of something when you really don’t know how. Please take the advice I and others have given you, I know we’ve been hard on you but you must please understand we see this kind of thing every day and it gets tiring and it really is heartbreaking to see this sort of thing happen all the time. The best thing you can do now is read up on some caresheets, and provide the best possible care for your BRB as possible. I hope you give this site another chance, there are many knowledgeable people here that are actually very willing to help if you do the right thing.
Sara

OK normally I just shut up and go to another thread... but this is ridiculous! it is obvious that you all LOVE the BRB and she has one.. and she has questions... for the love of GOD answer them and help get this snake in the condition in which you are all obviously upset about b/c you feel it isn’t right. I’m sooo sure that every freaking snake owner read 10 million books BEFORE they bought one. When I bought my first snake, I didn’t know JACK SHYT but since then, I’ve read everything and I do mean everything that I can put my hands on about each snake that I own. I can quote the freaking books! I have a snake handling friend that has waaaaay more experience with the actual handling of the snake... hands on.. but as far as husbandry and what to do when... I as a "newbie" far surpass his knowledge. Why don’t you guys just help her out?
**** Dani*** I don’t own a BRB, so any information I am giving you is strictly what I have looked up for you. It came from the book Barron’s Boas. A Complete Pet Owners Manual..beginning on page 67. There are as many as 9 subspecies of rainbow boas that have been identified. members of this species can grow to 5-7 feet. With moderate interaction and handling rainbow boas can become docile. they are extremely powerful. A cage temperature of mid 80’s during the day and mid 70’s at night is ideal. Colombians prefer higher temps. High humidity especially for rainbows originating in Brazil is VERY important. You should watch for signs of dehydration. Regurgitation, poor skin condition, and difficulty shedding are symptoms of low humidity. A large water dish should be provided to help increase humidity levels and allow the snake to soak.Rainbows have a high level of resistance to dermatitis or blister disease (this is covered on pg 61 of same book) and can soak for long periods of time without cause for alarm. However if the rainbow soaks constantly, your husbandry is off. the book goes on to provide information on temps for breeding which I didn’t think you needed. I also highly suggest you buy the book or a book similar in its authority. I hope I didn’t come off as being a bytch.. b/c that was not my intention... and I am SURE there are issues that this book didn’t cover and as a non owner.. wouldn’t have first hand knowledge of... but I do hope this helped you out a little.

The book is wrong, mid 80s is too hot for a BRB. Shoot for 77-79 for your youngster, never let it go above 83, it can be fatal.

Humidity is critical, 75+ for sub adults and adults, 90+ for babies.

A soak dish and a humid hide is a nice option, but this and other forums are full of housing advice so do some searching and come up with the solution that works best for you. Humidity isnt hard to keep established, but you will need to spend a little bit of time getting things just right. I dont bother with misting, cypress and water bowls keep my humidity levels where I want them to be. I do offer a moss/humid hide, but mostly because they really seem to like it.

With humidity comes mold, the more stuff you have in your cage, the more stuff you have to clean/disinfect.

Feed appropriate sized food. Its ok if they grow slow as long as they’re in good weight.

Find as many forums as you can and search the archives for all of the answers, then make your own choices. This is definitely not the only place with BRB discussion. Spending some time going through all of the discussion on all of the forums you can find is time well spent, all of the basic questions have answers just waiting for you to look for them.

Enjoy your snake!

Notice the book said.. that there are at least 9 subspecies of rainbow boas.. they aren’t all from Brazil.. the ones from Colombia require the higher heats. Dani.. snakes are like the Bible... you ask 100 different people to interpret.. and you will get 100 different things... what works for one snake may not work on another... basic husbandry is the same.. but your snake may thrive on a temp a few degrees cooler or a few degrees warmer. Find what works for you Hun.. and stick with it. Like I said, I don’t have a BRB but I think they are absolutely beautiful. Thank you SO much for saying that I am the nicest person on forum. There are LOTS of nice people here. It’s their way of weeding out the trolls and lets them pay more attention to the newbies that really want to learn. I had a few that were tough on me when I first came here... but I’ve read.. and read... until they actually tell people that I am one of the people to ask... which is cool to me. I have a philosophy.. if I have the knowledge.. I don’t care who did the research.. for the love of the species... I’ll share it. If I don’t have the answers.. I’ll look them up for you..then I get to learn too. And if your question is opinion... OH GOOD LORD do I have those LOL I’m so glad that I came across as someone you thought was nice and could trust... that is the type of vibe I want to give... karma is a bytch. be sure to let me know how your snake is doing.. please post pics. I’m hoping to get this done myself here real soon. I look forward to sharing conversations about your thoughts and ideas on forum.

The tank is not dry. Besides the fact that I mist it twice a day I have moss and a water dish in the tank. Gisele has shedded her skin with no problem. Let’s bet on how long Karma is going to head your way butt sniff. Just remember it comes back 10 fold-so be prepared. I would never in a million years say something like that."who wants to bet how long that things gonna live?" totally un-called for. I have 2 hides also one on the warm side one one the cold. She also has a branch to climb on. I have a thermometer and hygrometer in the tank and it is the perfect temp/humidity that are needed. Just out of curiosity what kind of snakes do you own???????????????????
