A more humane way to kill a mouse in one sec
First you hold the tail with one hand. Then take two fingers and grasp behind the ears, holding the back of the scull. Then pull both hands in the opposite directions. You dislocate the spine, and the mouse is dead in a second. Their might be some twitching, but thats all. It’s quick and more humane. It work’s great, and you can kill a rat the same way. |

This will likely not kill them the first time, or will cause a lot of blood spill, very messy and blood provides nutrients for your snake. As for the technique the OP posted, it is called cerebral dislocation, seperating the spinal cord from the brain, and yes, it kills instantly. If you happen to do it wrong, the rat/mouse will scream and suffer horribly. CO2 tanks require less work, are 100% effective, (except for pinkies) and is just as humane. It is basically a gas chamber that makes the rat or mouse go to sleep and not wake up. Simply sticking them in the freezer is not humane, the basically freeze before they even die. Incredibly painful if you ask me. This also causes deep tissue scarring, and is not as good of a quality for your snake to eat as when it is dead when frozen. when it is frozen after death, tissue scarring doesn’t occur. |

Quote: As soon as I bring any new snakes home, I start them out on f/t and offer only that. They get over it eventually :) I’ve bought snakes from breeders that only fed live (like my brb) and as soon as I got the little guy home, I started off f/t and he has has yet to refuse a meal :). Just keep offering, they will get hungry eventually!
I agree 100% with that, almost any snake can be switched with persistence. If it has not worked yet you probably did not try hard enough. |

It’s actually called: Cervical Dislocation Cerebral Dislocation would actually require brain surgury. LOL! |

Quote: how do you guys get yours to eat prekilled?
I’ve not had to do it in quite awhile, but in the past I’d make sure they were hungry, then go in with the tongs and get them to strike at it. If that doesnt work, an overnighter with fresh kill may work. Some snakes had to go from live to fresh kill to older kill to thawed, but they all got onto f/t eventually. Put a fresh kill on a tupperware lid in your snake’s cage before you go to bed, it may just be gone in the morning. |

Feeding this way allows them to discover their food while they’re on their nightly hunt so you’re not going to teach your snake that opening the cage means dinner. If your snake is too big for a tupperware lid, try a low shallow dish like a pyrex. Obviously its not a long term solution and there’s some risk of getting substrate in its mouth, but overall I think its better to teach them to eat f/t than have them hooked on live that will bite them sooner or later. I’d try ever few days until it eats. I dont like to give fresh dinner every day, I dont want them to get used to it always being there when they get around to eating. If its a hopper, I’d go ahead and leave it in there for a good 12-18 hours. Pinks rot quicker, I put them in around 1am and pull them around 10am or so. I’m not a big fan of pinks tho, I far prefer the bone ratio of the hoppers, weanlings and small mice. |

2) That’s potentially dangerous 3) That’s potentially messy Cervical Dislocation or CO2 euthanization are the best two methods. But that being said...BRBs aren’t going to consume any rodent that is so large that you should have to worry about this. I feed all of my BRBs live (supervised) rodents. |
