make sure you know what rainbow boa you want, different kinds require different care. I am assuming you are asking about the brazilian rainbow boa.

Just to make sure, you have to do LOTS of research on these guys. IMHO these aren’t good 1st time snakes, in case you are new to them.

Males get 4-5 feet, females get 5-6 feet some topping out at 7.
Average price for a baby $100-$200.
I keep my temps at 75 on the cool 82 on the warm.

Reflex rainbows dont need a cool and a warm side I have raised mine from a baby (sort of speak because it came from petco and they aquire snakes a little bigger than the baby size) and it has been raised in a rubbermaid bin because it holds humidity better and rainbows need humidity more than they need heat.

As you can see the rubber maid bin is up against the heater on the wall. however, ,my heat only comes on when it gets a certain temperature outside so my house is always at 73 degrees.

I have no UTH, no heatin lamp. all i do is mist it daily and my baby grows well.

Mine eats every week without issue and grows at a good rate.

I never have any health issues and my snake NEVER goes off of its food.

I really don’t understand why people keep snakes in rubbermaid containers... They keep humidity good yes but there is other ways too... Rubbermaids look so boring.. why have it if you can’t admire the cage he is in.... Having one rubber maid is fine i guess but i can’t stand it when i see people who have a whole room full of rubber maids stacked on shelves..Whats the point???...

I disagree, any reasonably responsible person can easily care for one.And why get something you may not want just to be a "Starter Snake",then get what you wanted to begin with.Makes no sense. My first snake ever was a Brazilian.

Bull crap, all reptiles do,and that would include rainbows. They NEED to be able to thermoregulate.Very bad advice you just gave out.

Jason.

I know personally I can’t afford a really elaborate fancy cage...I have some hand-me-down aquariums for my snakes....I had to build a lid for my 25 gallon tank as it didn’t come with one... it will take me a while to save up for a nicer terrarium. most people get BRB because they’re beautiful animals and they are wonderful pets...they make any cage look good.

I know for a lot of people our budgets are tight.. by the time you buy your BRB and the bedding and the hide spots and the heater and the water bowl and so on...you don’t always have the money for a fancy cage...

I’m not interested in showing off my cage...I didn’t buy a snake because I wanted to put something in a nice cage... The best part is….my snakes don’t care what my cage looks like! :-) They’re happy and I think I can speak for most snake owners when I say as long as they’re happy, I’M HAPPY! :-D

I get what your saying on that. I dont use tubs because i have all custom made cages or custom tops, but i may start using some in the future. All my snakes will just pretty much sit there unless i take them out except my cornsnake that will come to the glass and look at me. So if i used a tub their wouldnt be much of a difference. I may get another BRB after i move some stuff around and the boamaster cages come in. I was going to move a snake into a bigger tank but i may pass on it because it has alot of room

I Also disagree with this because My Second snake was a Rainbow and hes pretty good. nothing difficult about taking care of him at all but i also had a corn 2 years before i got him so . . .

Overall though hes a great snake. sometimes he gets pretty pissy but thats expected of just about all snakes really lol.

I say they can be first time snakes if you do the research that goes along with them and have a propper setup. I dont believe in the experiance rule with reptiles that arent dangerous. I would strongly recommend owning some others before any hots, snakes over 12 feet, or something dangerous.

BCIHandler, I feel very sorry for your snake. I can’t understand how he is digesting properly without a heat source.

Because when you have a lot of snakes, space and time becomes an issue. If I had all glass cages for my snakes, my whole house would be covered wall-to-wall. Not to mention the fact that it would probably take forever to clean and feed. Glass cages are expensive, heavy, hard to clean and without an elaborate set up, they look quite tacky (hey, everyone is entitled to their own opinion).

Lol no kidding I got my columbian rainbow about 2 weeks ago. By the end of the day I spent about 300! But it was worth every cent. Alice eats just fine and very friendly...to say the least I’ve been living off of delivery tips

Reflex, Addicted and Sra are all correct.

All reptiles need to thermoregulate.

Plastic versus glass enclosures are simply a preference. If you only have one BRB, then a glass enclosure would work just fine if you maintain proper temps and humidity at all times (not as easy to do compared to using plastic tubs).
