 Need Help With A Rescue!!!!!

Hey guys,

I’m getting a 10 year old female Rainbow tomorrow.....Rescue. She comes with enclosure and everything. I have been doing some research since I heard I was getting her. She comes from a pet store that went out of business. She had been housed with a male all her life. Four months ago the male died. The people that have her said she is very mean now. Always biting....when they hold her, they have to hold her head so she won’t turn around and bite them. I have held her before while at the pet store, and she used to be a sweet sweet thing.

Could it be she’s gravid and that’s why she’s biting?

Could she be missing the male? She is in the same enclosure, so she can probably still smell him?

Any help and advise is welcome.

Back to the research. lol

Thank you,
Edel

It could be she is gravid. It could be the changes in the structure are causing her stress. It could be any number of things.

It will take her time to get used to any changes. Go slow and handle her gently, watching her movements. Perhaps an extra hide in her enclosure will help make her feel more secure. All of a sudden, she doesn’t have any competition for heat or food or space. Id be kinda eeked out too.

Keep on reasearchin’, and good luck.

Im going to be adopting one from a friend. Its humidity is currently waaay too low and he is over 10 years old. A huge cage is comming with him, and the first thing Teramin will be getting is new substrate and a few large moss hide boxes. Ive heard he spends nearly all of his time in his water dish, but has always had shedding issues. (The owner has an allergy to mold and moss- and is too stubborn to realize he could get another snake that does not need these things...grrrr)

He eats just fine though. Cant wait to get him and set him up a more naturalistic environment and then leave him alone a week to check it out. Ill be posting when I get him. The owner is moving to Holland and has another delay, so his move got pushed back. I need to tell him I need the snake ASAP if he wants me to take it, then smack him upside the head a time or two for being a well meaning idiot. Least the temps and regular feedings happen, and he does have a bowl large enough to soak his whole body in.

I’d be surprised if her aggressive behavior is related to the loss of the male. Any other changes occur during that time that you know of? Temp, humidity, lighting....lots of things can affect their behavior. If the male died in the cage, I would think that the cage got a 100% sterilization and cleaning afterwards, which was probably stressful for her and may have triggered things. Just guessing though. Gravid females will often go off food, look swollen or larger towards the back end of their bodies, and sometimes spend time laying on their back or sides, so you can keep an eye out for these signs.
I’ve heard many people say gravid females need a higher basking temp then what many people recommend for these guys...around 90 degrees. I can’t confirm that because I’ve never had to deal with it, but something to keep in mind as you do your research. Good luck!

 Need Help With A Rescue!!!!!

Hey,

Thanks guys.

When these guys took the pair back in July they were told to only feed the snakes every six to eight weeks. So am assuming she’s biting because she is very hungry.
They had zero to none humidity.....maybe just a bowl of water......but I really don’t know. Kept on newspaper.

The store I usually get the mice/rats from is closed today due to Easter.....I will head out to Petsmart and get some rats there.....f/t $11.99 for a large rat. LOL Nice (It’s robbery) LOL But, what can I do. She needs to eat.
Should I start her today....wait a day or two until she gets a bit used to her new environment? IDK.....Anyway, she should be here any minute.

I will post pics and keep you guys posted.

Thanks for all the help.

Edel

They basically already covered it Edel. I would say make her viv naturalistic but thats just me. ya’know......like a topsoil and other soils substrate and then lots of live plants, shrubs, and vines.

When I got my rescue, I started offering food right away. My vet said that was the right thing to do once I got her in. I’m feeding every 4-5 days until she starts to get some weight back. If yours will eat, I say go for it, but if the snake isn’t interested, don’t overdo it. You might stress her out more.
