Just Got Back From The Vet with the Rescue!!!!!

I had to get this snake in to see what I needed to do to nurse it back to health.

First off, the vet was feeling the snake down starting at the throat.....to see if she felt anything strange. When she got down low the snake urinated (omg it must have been a cup lol) all over the place. The vet stated there seemed to be something hard, like hard urates. So as she pressed down.....guess what, the snake exposed the hemi penises.....Yup she is a he.

At this point I totally lost it. I told the vet how the female was so much smaller than the male, that when I got this snake I really thought it was the female. The vet said "I can tell you right now, just by looking at him, that the female died of starvation-no hydration.....he was not too far behind."

I have to bathe him in a very warm bath every day for two weeks.....and apply an ointment on both his eyes and his nose. The good eye has at least a couple of sheds stuck to it. The bad eye, well, she said she can’t guarantee that it will get better. She thinks it is his cornea, so dried up from having no hydration.

She said feed him a couple small to medium rats every five to seven days if he’ll take them. He is 1765 grams. She said he should be at least 2400 grams. He is between 6 to 7 feet.

I told her what a sweet sweet boy he used to be (after he struck at her a few times), for I had held him for hours. She said he has been so neglected and starved, that he is just miserable and angry. She said that with some gentle handling and food in his belly, that he will become that same sweet boy. She said the reason he hasn’t struck at me is probably because he still remembers me. After all, it has only been 9 months since I last saw him.

No RI, which is good. Vet gave him a shot of fluids to help with the hydration and told me that since he is so bad, that I can’t have the substrate just moist....it needs to be totally wet. Until he gets the hydration he needs. Then we can go to moist.

She said the glass tank will work well. That I need to get him some tropical plants to put in the enclosure....this will help the humidity stay up. For the heat, since am having problems getting it above 65 on the cool side, she suggested a ceramic heat emitter. But that the plants in the tank will also help distribute the heat to a more constant. 80-85 in the hot and in the 70s for the cool.

She is so awsome. She knows I have tons of beardies and other snakes, and that some days I get this wild idea that I like to do rescues LOL, so she only charged me for the check up.....she didn’t charge for either the shot or the ointment.

Anyway, we go in to see her in two weeks.

I can’t wait to see that sweet sweet boy he used to be.

***SIGH*** Now to search for another name. lol

Thank you for the update on your new buddy. I love coconut hull fibre for keeping my Red Tail/Colombian crosses. After a week I stir it up because the top dries, but the bottom is still moist. When its dried out I mist heavily or I add more water and stir it up, then do a full change monthly. My suggestion would also be to put a large bowl of water so it is halfway under that Ceramic heat emitter with the warm hide next to it. The heat will evaporate the water, keeping the humidity up in the tank. Just wash and refill every few days. With his reserves being so low from dehydration and starvation you will want to be kind of anal about keeping his water and cage clean to prevent infection, as Im sure his immunity could be low.

I would still add some clear pedialyte to the water bath, unless the vet says theres a reason not to. It will help the electrolyte balance, which will help his liver and kidneys as he rehydrates after such long term dehydration. It sounds like you really may have saved a life here.

That is a MASSIVE male...bigger than any I’ve heard of! Really large females can evert their hemipenial homologs...something to consider maybe...

I would keep your humidity up for the first two weeks if you are dealing with stuck shed and hydration problems. 90 to 100%. Worked great for me and it has for other rescuers I’ve spoken with.

On a side note, why does it seem like the vast majority of BRB keepers have them as rescues?

because stupid people buy them thinking they can take care of em but really have no idea how much care it really takes to keep one healthy let alone alive. and such people shouldn’t even be allowed to buy them if they don’t know what the f*** they’re doing!

Oh....now am confused. LOL I am doing some research on this now. And I do see how this can be confusing. We weren’t really examining that way, so it was just a quick look when she exposed it. So, when she is feeling better, I will have her probed.
As for right now, she is still a she and her name is still Uma. lol

WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!! I am so excited!!!! I think she knows....I think she knows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She has not striked at me at all. I gave her her bath and she was calm and let me rub her with the water. She did fight me a bit when I rubbed her eye with the water, but not when I put the ointment on it. Have to put it on both eyes and the nose.
I released the hold around the head a bit, just to see what she would do and she was fine.

Then I placed her in her enclosure and while I worked on the humid hide to get it a bit more wet and while I worked some water around the mulch in the tank........
this is what she did the whole time....my hands all over the tank. And she let me pet her for quite a while.

I think it’s all about caring, like you said. Caring enough and wanting to do right by the animal. I didn’t know anything about them, except I knew they are these amazing beautiful creatures. But come on, how long does it really take to do a little research and learn what you need to lern to give the best home to the snake you possibly can? It’s all about lazy and not caring, I think. And it makes me so angry and sad to think that the male died such an awful dead because someone didn’t care enough to read a few paragraphs and make a few changes.....and didn’t care enough to say to someone, ’hey, i can’t do this. take them.’

Thanks for all the help you guys. I will definitely keep you posted. I am so in love with her. I can’t wait until she gets healthy again.

I think snakes in general dont like their heads messed with. Mine will let me hold thier heads, and I look at their teeth and gums breifly to get them used to it at a young age, so that its easier for the vet down the line...but they definately dont like it.

Yours is probably feeling a whole lot of releif with the baths and humidity. Looks like its starting to get its rainbow sheen back, which is a great sign. I see it likes to get substrate in the water too. I have to change the water a few times a week to keep it clean because of that. ha!

Here is hoping the ointment works for both eyes! *keeps fingers crossed* Keep up the great job.

Yea, my corns didn’t like their head and tail bothered at first, but now they’re fine with it.

Today’s Progess:

We just had our bath. I thought I would try and trust her a bit, so I let her go completely in the bathtub. She swam for a bit and then she started to climb out of the tub. I put my hands on the edge of the tub, just leaning on them there. She crawled up the side of the tub and onto my hand and my forearm. WooHoo!!!!

How much can i trust her? I will take her out during the day tomorrow and just hold her. Hopefully I don’t get bitten. if I do, oh well. But at some point am gonna have to trust her and she’s gonna have to trust me. ***phew***

Thanks for the support guys!!!

Good grief Edel! So sorry to hear the male (or female?) was lost. I can’t believe people would let the animals get to such a debilitated condition.

Do you have to take the snake out daily? Wouldn’t it be best to let her settle down for a bit? I’m sure she needs to soak, but can she not find the bowl on her own (honest question, please don’t think I’m being snide.) I know mine will soak if I forget to turn his Repti-mister on. But, he’s a healthy snake.

I wish you all the best in getting that beautiful BRB healthy again. They are such sweet snakes. I’m sure with regular handling she will trust you again.

LOL CP, you have been here......you give me strength and hope. Thank you!!!!!

I do hope you can come up.....I can’t wait for you to meet her. She is so sweet already. I know she will be that old girl she used to be. lol

One step at a time. ***SIGH***

Melody,
No worries....I know you’re thinking about the Rainbow. I will only take her out for her bath today and give her that time alone for now. Thank you!!! I do have to take her out and put the ointment on her eyes though, so the baths at night I will continue to do. I too hope the eye caps come off and the eye becomes healthy again. Oh I do hope so.

I will try and feed her again tomorrow, five days. I’m sure she will take the meal.
