 UMA UPDATE.....

Hey Guys,

A lot of you have been asking so I thought I would update you.

When I got her she weighed 1700 grams......Last week or so when we went to the Vet’s grand opening she weighed 3100 and today at her check up she weighed 3500. She is absolutely beautiful.

We didn’t have an appointment, but last week while Chris fed the snakes he noticed Uma had some lumps on her ribs. It appears that she has abcesses on her liver. Vet said that when a snake is starved and neglected like she was, once their body starts regenerating and doing better, things like these can happen. They did xrays and blood work.....the Vet seems to think that there may be an infection in her eye and that is why it is not healing. Uma is very anemic; because she has had such steady weight gain and quite quickly, her body is having a little hard time adjusting. The good news is that they did see a lot of very young red blood cells, so this will take care of itself in time. Vet gave Uma a couple shots of antibiotics and tomorrow moring we will have the blood test results back. If it is an infection, they will have to go into her eye and do a biopsy. Hopefully we can save the eye, but who knows.

The abcesses.....well the only thing is to do surgery. Vet said that if they are not removed they will keep growing and multiplying until they take over the liver.

I am very sad.....vet said the abcesses is not something we need to decide on right at this moment. She wants to take care of the eye first.......IDK what we should do. She has gone through so much already. She is so beautiful and so active. Do I put her through something like this? What are the chances she will make it through the surgery and what are the chances she won’t? If she doesn’t, then her life has been cut short. Do we just let her live happy for the next "however time it will take".....until the liver fails? Anyway, we have lots more questions for the vet and then we’ll decide what the best thing for Uma might be.

 UMA UPDATE.....

Arg, tough decision. But OMG she looks sooooo much better than before. Hardly looks like the same snake. Whatever you decide on, you have made her life measurably better! Im certain she is more comfortable now than she has been in a very very long time.

When her time comes, be that 6 months or 15 years from now...other snakes will find their way to you, and youll know just how to care for them.

 UMA UPDATE.....

Thank you Fairy Frog Mother,

Your words of support mean a lot.

Chris posted on the beardie community forum, so instead of typing it all up again, am just gonna quote him. lol I know, pretty lazy.

Quote:

Uma had her ultra sound today and great news ....her liver is spotless!!!!...all internal organs are clear of any abscesses. The rapid growth and return to normal weight are causing lumps of muscle mass ....which will even out in time.

However after an examination with an ophthalmologist our vet has determined that the problem eye is so bad that it is necessary to make a small incision in the eye cap(spectacle) and drain the edema (fluid) to relieve her of the pressure and infectious fluid. The eye does not respond to light at this time and the fluid is so thick that they can not see the retina. After the surgery specific antibiotics will be prescribed ....not just baytril. The chances are 50/50 that she will regain sight in that eye. It is also slightly evident in the other eye also ...but the antibiotics should knock that out. Her blood panel reveals no elevated white blood count , indicating that the infection is localized , more likely fungal and not systemic, (in the blood). We are getting a quote for the surgery in the next 48 hrs. Of course at this point we are proceeding .... she will live a full life, if we have anything to do with it, and we love her dearly.

I am elated that there are no abscesses..whew ... what a relief.

Cp

So yes.....we are SO Happy that our baby is going to be ok. Hopefully that 50/50 on the eye goes our way.

Thank you!!!

Edel

 UMA UPDATE.....

Oh hurray hurray! thats such fantastic news!

Sounds like you have a fantastic Vet too. Glad he double checked before making her go through surgery. Hopefully all will go well with the eye surgery if she has it. But a half blind snake can still eat and live comfortably.

Keep up the great work guys!

 UMA UPDATE.....

Hello Fairy Frog Mother,

Sorry I haven’t updated on here.

The surgery went well.....she made it through ok. She is a very strong and healthy girl. It appears that she may lose the left eye. The infection had moved to the right eye, and if it doesn’t go away, there is a possibility that she may also lose the right eye. We are hopeful that the meds/antibiotics will defeat the infection.

I had to empty her enclosure of everything.....cyprus mulch, rock, plants.....and placed towels on the bottom. Boy, it’s gonna be hard keeping the humidity. Yesterday it was at 71%, I thought I was doing good.....today when I got home from work it was at 44%. I think the answer may be baths, baths, and more baths.

She was really out of it for a long while and slept for hours in her water bowl after the surgery. Even this morning she seemed kind of loopy. I took her in so the vet could teach me how to give her the antibiotic orally.....a pill. OY.....lol Well, she sure showed us. lol I was going to do it and the vet was going to guide me. Uma is so strong, the vet could not do it herslef, so while I held her, the vet opened her mouth and the nurse/aide/helper lol administered the pill.

Anyway, we are hoping for a miracle......even if she loses that left eye......that the infection is taken under control and the right eye might be saved.

Thank you,
Edel
