How to sex a snake? help

I have been looking at two rtb’s at a Pet Co near my house which are 1 to 2 years old, both look very healthy but I want a male because the thought of a ten foot female scares me a little. How can I look at the snake and be somewhat sure of it’s sex. I know they have spurs at the opening about an inch from the end of their tail but I do not know how to look at them a draw a good educated conclusion.

any advice would be helpful thanks.

It’s not a good thing if a larger size scares you, you cna actually have the snake probed by a vet, there is no safe way to actually just physically look at the snake and tell what sex it is unless it is full grown. All of them have the spurs, males spurs are normally larger, but I am pretty sure a non sexually mature, baby wont have different sized spurs yet, I may be wrong. If you but the snake as a baby, then the size as an adult won’t be as intemidating because you raised that snake and it is harly noticable, I have a 14 foot burm that I didn’t really raise, but she is a sweet heart.

Hey if you can’t imagine yourself holding a ten footer just try and imagine me, a female who is 5’3’’ holding a 17 foot burm, my aunts, all by yourself....now that was funny.

The Petco Guy is Full of you know what.

As far as sexing goes. Probing needs to be taught person to person, face to face, so that is out of the question, if done improperly it can cause injuries. best for adults.

Popping is another meathod usually used for baby boas. This is when you carefully expose the sexual organs.By firmly grasping the tail between your thumb and forfinger past the cloaca you rub the ventral side forwards to the cloaca with your thumb either hemipenises will be exposed to indicate a male or nothing but a pucker for a female. It only works if done correctly. best with babies and small boas(under 3’).

The Rub meathod is the one that I typically use as it is nonevasive and easier. This is basically the pop meathod with out the pop. Instead of popping you will be feeling for a pair of bumps like bbs. This works for animals between 2’ and around 5’(perhaps more if you are good). The key thing to accurate results is the snake needs to be relaxed, it wouldn’t matter if the snake has the biggest package in the boa kingdom you aren’t going to feel a thing if the tail muscels are tense. bbs= male nothing= female. best for juvies to sub adult
