Another Mites Question I used Rid for Lice on the cage and everything in it, let it soak in for a while and then scrubbed it all down. I sprayed my snake with Reptile Relief while this was all going on, but the only problem was that a bunch of the mites were on her head, which was the one place we couldn’t spray. Today (a day after treatment) she has a few on her back and on her head. I feel as though there’s no way to get rid of them if I can’t spray her head.. help.

Another Mites Question Take her and everything else out of the cage. Spray the cage down, and let it dry, do not wipe it down. Spray the snake with the rid or the reptile relief and let it dry. Take all objects that were once in the cage and soak them in 1/4 bleach, 3/4 water, this will get rid of any hiding in her stuff. Once everything is clean, sanatary and dry, set the cage back up with out the water bowl in it, leave that out for a day. If snake oil is available to you at your local pet store, rub the snake down with that, this will clear all dead and alive pests from her scales and moisturize her. The snake oil can be applied to the head and will slide the mites on there off. Good luck.

Another Mites Question Zackman, I used the lice stuff too.. found the lil recipe in a boa book... lil bottle to 3/4 gallon of water.... Use a cotton ball and apply directly to snake and carefully apply under the chin.. but you can’t get around their eyes. I filled my regular tank with bleach solution and let sit overnite. The next day I took a scrub brush and got down in the crevices. Rinsed well... and let air dry to make sure there were no fumes etc. Anything that can be replaced as far as hides etc.. throw them away and replace.. it’s just not worth it. I’m not sure of the Reptile relief but it didn’t say that you couldn’t use the lice treatment again... I didn’t have to... how did you dilute it? They are hard lil buggers to kill... just be diligent... overly cautious and patient. Do it again until you get rid of them. Make sure the snake is in a quarantine enclosure that is easy to clean.. use newspapers for substrate.. put in bare minimum. Change everything daily.Don’t put the snake back in regular enclosure until you are sure they are gone.
Good luck. Hope this helps
Susan

Another Mites Question the best way (in my opinion) to get rid of the mites on the snake itself is to let the snake soak in warm water. i use a rubbermaid tub and put in enough water to go most of the way up the snakes sides. put the snake in and put on the lid (i have a couple holes drilled in the lid for ventalation). let the snake soak for about an hour while you clean out the enclosure. for the enclosure i use Equate bedding spray (its a lice spray you can get at walmart). it has the same active ingredient as provent-a-mite but only a fraction of the cost. take out the snakes water dish. dump the substrait you have in there and replace it. spray all the new substrait and anything else in the enclosure really well. be sure to get into any corners, cracks, and crevices. let the enclosure air out really well before you put the snake back in it( i usually give it 45 min or so). then dry off your snake and pick off any mites that you can see(they should be dead since the water drowns them). then you can put her back in her enclosure. any mites that were not killed by the soaking process won’t last long because the residue of the spray in the substrait etc. should take care of them. you can put the water dish back in after a few hours. going through this process once usually takes care of the problem, but just to make sure i always repeat it once more after about a week. i have had to use this method a couple times when i rescued snakes from less than perfect conditions and they came with mites. i also got mites once from a packace of aspen bedding a good while ago. so i can tell you from personal experience that it works wonders.
good luck

Another Mites Question I have the Reptile Relief, I won’t spray my snake with Rid.
But my snake went into a shed early to try and get rid of the mites. I’m guessing that means I’ll have to wait a little longer to help her.
Thanks to everyone, I’ll do whatever it takes to get rid of those nasty things.
