 My rtb has mites, HELP!!!

I dont have mite experience, but Ive read that your supposed to soak him in luke warm water for about 1-2 hours and then put vaseline (petroleum jelly) on him (not his eyes mouth of course) a thick layer for maybe 10-20 minutes and then gently wash it off that should kill off the mites and do that maybe 2 a week or every time you notice any mites.

Keep him in a tuberware box with water for the soaking with airholes of course. and dissinfect the cage, and all items in the cage with 5% bleach, make sure you rinse all the bleach out, and throw away the old substrate and put in some new substrate.

This is just what Ive read about, but you can find a few posts online about how to get rid of mites.

DONT USE OLIVE OIL it might kill the snake.

Hope it helps.

Experienced posters please give him some better advice if im wrong.

 My rtb has mites, HELP!!!

There are plenty of mite treatments out there.. they all have the directions on the back. In my boa book.. I found a home remedy that worked for me. You buy the human lice treatment (NIX etc) the small bottle I think is 2 ounces.. mix with 3/4 of a gallon of water.. use cotton balls..apply directly to snake... put the snake in quarantine... bare necessities... newspaper... hides... water bowl... this has to be changed every day until you see NO mites. Your regular enclosure needs to be emptied of all furniture... anything that you can throw away and replace... do so... fill the enclosure with bleach water and let soak overnight. the next day... you need to take a scrub brush and clean down in the cracks and crevices... rinse well... and let air dry. Only move your snake back into his enclosure after you are sure mites are gone. Everyone has their own method that they prefer. I got this out of Barron’s Boas. A Complete Pet Owners Manual. I bought a new boa.. and was so caught up in the moment that I didn’t even check for mites... you know what they say... live and learn. I did this once... and I mean I was almost anal about it. I cleaned everything every single day. It works trust me.... but they say that the store bought treatments work also. I see posts where people have to treat more than once with the other stuff... but then again I doubt they had a tooth brush scrubbing the heck out of their enclosure like I did either lol anyway hope this helps... good luck!

I use ExoTerra Forest Bark, it works WONDERS with keeping the humidity up, it dosent mold when water is involved and it looks great. Just remember to feed your snake in a separet enclosure because he cant digest the bark if he accidentally swallows some.

Its not hard, Mist the cage..and put the water bowl closer to the heat source.. and if you have a screen lid put aluminum foil over the top and duct tape it down...it keeps all the heat and humidity in.

Never apply pestcides to a snake, only use permetherin based treatments on cages and cage furniture!.

Take the water and snake out of the cage and spray the inside of the cage with rid for lice(permetherin active ingridiant, same as PAM)and spray the inside of the cage evenly, let dry completely and put snake back in.Don’t put the water in for at least another day!.

Do NOT apply directly to the snake!!

Any questions just shoot,This stuff can be harmfull if used improperly!

 My rtb has mites, HELP!!!

Like I saidf. everyone has their own remedy of what will and what will not work.. you use the liquid 2 oz bottle of lice shampoo... came directly out of my snake book... I did it.. snake is still alive... and the point is... i DO NOT have a mite problem.. I didn’t spray the lice spray in my enclosure... used bleach water... and then rinsed VERY well... then air dried for several days while snake was in quarantine for the mites... like I said... change everything..every day... the white paper towel thing is wonderful... however I used newspaper just for the convenience of them. Snakes and their care is kinda like the bible... ask 100 different people what they think.. you will get 100 different answers... find something you are comfortable with... what works for you and your snake... and stick to it.
P.S. For the record.. I told you the wrong book title... I found that remedy in my Barrons Python’s A Complete Pet Owners Manual. the page number is 36.

 My rtb has mites, HELP!!!

getting rid of mites can be very simple. Addicted is correct about using a permetherin based treatment (I use the generic lice spray for furniture). Spray only the cage and cage furniture except for the water bowl. DO NOT under any circumstances spray this stuff on your snake. It can and will kill your snake. It is not even supposed to be sprayed on humans just the furniture. Soak your boa in luke warm water while you let the cage air out from the fumes. If it is a comfort for you to actually spray something on your boa, use this Mite Spray. It does seem to help with the initial infestation. Change your bedding and keep an eye on your snake, and you should be just fine. If you have more than one snake, you may want to treat all of your other enclosures as well.

You keep talking about your snake book,Do you believe everything you read?I have a book that says you should send me all your money,Want to read it?Some snake books have very bad and outdated info in them.

I Don’t care what the book says this stuff can be very harmful if used improperly,You should under no circumstances spray, wipe or bath your snake in permetherin!!

I agree with you Addicted 100% and perfer the Permetherin based spray to the shampoo meathod.

But I also want to add, just like you said this stuff can be very harmful if used improperly, this is also true for the spray. I can’t stress how important it is to follow the procedure to the t.

Yup the spray is a better option in my opinion too.

Also,If anyone is ever un sure of the treatment procedure just follow the directions that are on the Provent A Mite can,The rid is the exact same stuff.Just a whole lot better for the wallet!
