Question for those w/ front opening cages

hey guys, i haven’t been around in a while, life has been busy. i moved to a new place, which means i have more space, so the boa can get more space too! right now i’m trying to decide between building her a cage, (i’m fairly capable) and buying one. it seems like cost will be close to the same, maybe even slightly less to buy one because i’ll go nuts while building and try to make it really cool...

one thing that turns me off about buying cages is that most of them seem to open from the front. right now mine opens from the top, which is nice because its not that scary to dangle a rat in there with a pair of pliers and let her strike at it. if i get a front opening one, it almost seems like my hand and face will be in direct line with her strike ... does this bother y’all at all?

please don’t start discussing feeding in/out of the enclosure. i know that we all have opinions, i don’t care to hear them again.

thanks,
brett

Question for those w/ front opening cages

Some animals eat in different ways some will eat right off the floor. With all my striking animals it’s not been a problem. It is all about positioning and keeping a close eye on the snake and it’s movements. I’ve been using front opening cages for 2 years and never had a problem. Buy a cage.

Top three manufactures + downside + upside
reptilebasics.com little bit more then boaphile (awesome customer service, fast, easy to clean)
boaphile.com bit harder to clean , sometimes longer waits and sometimes spotty communication(great all around otherwise)
animalplastics.com some assembly required (easy to clean)

Question for those w/ front opening cages

ok, that’s reassuring, thanks guys ... but here’s the big kicker. i just snagged $200 worth of free gift cards for Lowe’s from work. So now its almost like the cage will be free if i build it myself. ahhhh... such a difficult decision.

i guess i can just spend that lowe’s money on some other projects, but a nice free snake house sounds prettttty tempting. maybe i’ll compromise with myself by building a good stand for the new wellbuilt and easy to maintain plastic cage to sit on.

Question for those w/ front opening cages

You can make it more customed if you build your own and you will be very proud if you do manage to do it yourself. My cage opens at the front but is split inbto 2 levels by a shelf. If she’s on the top shelf which she usually is I put her food at the bottom and the scent brings her down. I think theres pro’s and cons with whichever kind of enclosure you have.

Question for those w/ front opening cages

i feed my snakes from a level stand point and probably always will. I know a man whos nickname is slim who keeps retics and a 17 foot burmese and he feeds them all at a level plain if u ever tried to offer a 17 foot burm food you wont be worried about a 6-10 foot boa my friend lol. Still dont worry about it but as you should do anyway exercise your feedings with extreme caution

Question for those w/ front opening cages

hey man I’m kinda in the same predicament as you I’m currently building a cage for my snakes also i think buying one is easier and might look a little nicer but the one I’m building is 2x2x6 and i am building three units witch can be stacked together strictly for the fact that a six foot tall by six foot long tank will be a little tricky and hard to move if needed to. but all the materials added up was just over five hundred and i don’t think that’s a bad price at all for three six foot enclosures. maybe you should do something like that especially if you have more than one snake.

Question for those w/ front opening cages

I was thinking of getting one of those front opening cages. I don’t have to worry about putting my hand in there during feeding time because I feed live.

I’m sure as you already know. Feeding live is an unsafe practice. There are several ways live feeders can injure your snake and it only takes a second. Feeding frozen thawed or prekilled is the safest way.

Hopefully if someone wants to add to this specific topic they will post information and links and not flame.
