 Emily’s size

Well it’s been a long time since I posted but I wanted to throw an update out. Emily was 18 inches when we got her a year ago. She has grown like a weed and is now eating f/t large rat’s and measures around 5 to 6 feet. I got her a boaphile cage and it works great, keeping the temps and humidity wright where I need them. Emily is a very friendly girl and loves to hang out on my son Gavin who just turned 5 on April 1st (and yes, being born on April 1st makes you a prankster). Gavin knows the rules and knows he is never to handle Emily without me there. I’ll post pics later on tonight when my wife gets home because I cant figure out how they get from the camera to the computer.

Thanks

She just ate her second F/T rat. She would never eat them before so I was having to feed her pre-killed and man does that get expensive at $8.50 per rat. So now I can start buying F/T and saving some serious cash, Maybe even enough to buy myself that Albino Boa that my wife say’s there is no way in hell i’m getting, as she just caught me typing. I won the first battle and I shall win the second !!!

Thanks Florida boy, she slowed down a little over the winter to about once every 3 weeks but now that the weather is warming up she is back on track eating every 7 to 10 days. usually closer to ten. Its weird how they know its cold outside, she’s in a climate controlled Boaphile cage. Maybe she can tell by the barometric pressure, if snakes can do that.

They can tell if it is hot, cold, raining, who knows, possibly if it is night or day. As for feeding I would advise to slow her down a bit to around every 10 to 14 days. Just because a boa will eat doesn’t mean they need to . She has done a good bit of growing in one year and she looks great but, growing that fast can take a toll on a boas overall lifespan. If she continued to feed on a weekly basis over the next few years it could shorten her life span conciderably. This isn’t a set in stone death sentence, but it is proven that boas raised slower live longer(on average) and have less health problems. Anyway, keep up the good work. They are amazing animals.

Hey, thanks for all the input everyone. My next purchase I think will be an Albino, I love the colors and I just happen to have the money burning a hole in my pocket. Who would be the BEST breeder to get a boa from?

Well... There are several breeders you can get great albinos from. You can go big, pay alot probably get a nice animal or you can try out some of the smaller private breeders, pay a bit less, still probably get a great animal. Also it comes down to how nice of an albino you want, there are alot of lines out there that are special, like the Lipstick line, or the Red Albino line.

Pete has a few nice Albinos for 650-750 (the $750 male is spectacular{and I’m not big on albinos})
PK Albinos

Exoticsbynature has a couple females for $675
EBN Albinos

Thats all I can really find right now that I would recomend. It is right befor most boa litters are born right now, most of last years babies have been sold. Although there is a really good selection of Sharp strain Albinos right now, because of their higher price, they don’t tend to sell out too quickly.

Thanks Florida boy, your right those are nice looking. when are new litters usually born ? If its within the next couple of months I may as well wait so I can have a better pick. I’m not in a rush, I would still need to set up my quarantine tank and besides, I like getting them young, like after there first couple of feedings so I can be the one to grow them.

By August the majority of boa litters will be born and you will have tons to choose from. And the prices will be lower, by a good bit. This year i would expect to see a multitude of Albino boas from $450 to $600.

There is a small reptile show in Massachusetts this coming weekend that I’m going to. I’m not planning on buying anything but I have a tank set up anyway because if I see something really nice I want to make sure I have a place for it. Why not be prepared.
