 My new Red Tail.

My husband just got me a Red Tail Boa and I was wondering what kind of Red Tail she is. She is 4 years old, 8 ft long, and weighs around 18 lbs. Also if she looks unhealthy to anyone please let me know. Thanks!

I wasn’t sure which post to reply to since you posted this twice...but...I really don’t think it "needs" 6-feet of height in an enclosure. I personally would make the enclosure 5’ wide x 3’ deep x 3’ tall.

And as far as what type she is...

Well if she’s a "True" Red Tail...Then she’s a BCC. Do you know anything about it’s background or genetics?

And although she is nice...she looks pretty "normal" to me...but then my niche is more BRBs, BPs and Corns.

BTW...Kinda funny how your camera flash makes certain shirts "see through" isn’t it?!?!

Good luck with her Tiffany21, what is she eating? Mine is on large rats but she’s not as big as your girl.
Here is a pic of my son holding our boa, Emily

As I’m sure you’re well aware... I’m not sure if this is your first snake or not... but there is no way I would let that snake be that close to a child that young. My Boa is over 7 foot long.. and she bit an adult this weekend... I’ve never seen so much blood in my life... and I’m a nurse!!!!! I am certainly not trying to tell you how to take care of your daughter (she is beautiful by the way) OR how to take care of your snake... but I felt obligated to warn you... that snake could do SERIOUS damage to your baby. The bite would scar her little face... do serious damage to any other body part and if it constricted on her.. you’d play hell trying to get it off.. and the harsh reality of it is... you probably couldn’t get it off of her before it killed her. I really hope I haven’t offended you or anyone else... I just know what MY snake could do.. and it looks like yours is pretty close to the same size... I don’t even hold that snake alone. I will let my 100 pound son "drape it" on him.. supervised by an adult... but when I saw that picture... I was mortified at what I know that snake can do to her.. so please.. don’t be offended.. just be careful.

Susan

P.S.

I know that I’ve painted quite a grim picture... but I’d rather be overly cautious.. than as a parent have to feel responsible for something like that happening to my child.
I still can’t get over how pretty she is... I didn’t give birth to a blonde haired child... so I think they are just adorable.

Thank you for the info and I will be more careful in the future, but what you can’t see in the pic is my husband holding the snake, but you are probably right a Snake that size shouldn’t be around my little girl. And the pics are from when I first got my snake, my daughter hasn’t been around her since then because we talked to vets and they advised against it. But thank you for your concern.

Once again Tiff.. I really didn’t want to offend you...and you’re right.. I couldn’t see your husband holding it... but I’ve seen my 7 foot try to snatch a 6’3 man into her enclosure when she was hungry and the room was prescented... there was ALOT of blood... I’m not joking. I LOVE that snake.. but I have a renewed respect for it. I know that it can do serious damage.

Thank you for the new picture... she is adorable.. I do have a blonde haired step daughter.. but I got her when she was 7 and had already "outgrown cute" lol I have 3 natural children.. we all have dark hair and dark eyes. She is so pretty and I look forward to engaing in conversations with you on forum.. congrats on the nice present ..tell hubby he did GOOD! The snake is amazing!

Susan

 My new Red Tail.

Amazing snake and beautiful little girl. My RTB is only 4ft 8in and she struck an older man and the amount of blood surprised me. He came back with his hand wrapped up and the blood was still seeping through. She is an amazing animal but I have a new respect for her now. My case is slightly different in that she had been out for awhile and was being pet by many people and he decided to touch the head even after a stern warning not to from both myself and the snake. Still my respect for her had skyrocketed. Even at this size I don’t take her out if I’m alone.

Megan
