Okay my snake completly turned on me.

Is she under a lot of stress? Are you scared, because your energy can reflect on them and they can sense your fear. Just remember to be calm. And keep the stress level down. Cover the cage with a blanket, keep the snake away from loud noises and such.

If the problem persists for much longer, it could be a sign of a medical problem and you may want to have a vet take a look at your snake.

You wanna hear my story? Well, tough. Here it is anyway. I got a rtb for my birthday and I could hold him with no problem. Up until the third month in. He bit me on the arm and left four teeth. That was last summer. Now I can hold Loki only if I have a hold of his head. Because I am scared of being tagged.

For you, keep socializing once you feel comfortable and don’t rush right in on the snuggling. Good luck with her.

Okay my snake completly turned on me.

All right,
first of all, i wanna tell you that even if you are stressed or whatever your snake will not feel it. The only animals can feel your fear are sharks and dogs. Sharks because they can feel your heartbeat and his electric impulse, dogs can smell your skin and if you are scared, you’ll sweat.

By the way, Boa is not like a little cutie dog, it’s a preistoric reptile. The follow impulses and they don’t think. If she’s often striking you she maybe stressed. It will be just a period. Check her tail and make sure she’s not loaded with lots of "hard poop" also don’t be scared and when you want to handle her, just put your hand on her, don’t move fast or slow, just do it naturally. She needs to understand who’s the boss...

It can happen, i had a boa when i was a child and he did bite me lots of times, after a while he quit it and now it’s a very nice boa.
So, don’t be afraid, keep in mind that boas are wild animals and you must be the "boss" always.
hope this can help

brittanywordisbond How old is your rtb? How often do you feed? How do you feed your rtb, with tongs in a feeding tub? Or in the cage? Live prey? Frozen? Or fresh killed? Send me a message if you would please! I’m just curious, and maybe I can help! I’ve had rtb for many years now. Babies to my oldest is now almost 11 years old. Later, Ron

Thank God... someone finally asked the right questions.... Brittany.. in addition to how you feed... what type of enclosure... what are your temps... your humidity... hows her skin... her sheds...
She could be stressed... she could be sick... or she could just be..a byatch.. lol

I have a male RTB that is about 5 feet... he wouldn’t bite a thing... he loves the way I smell..prefers to be on me...will crawl off of my husband to get to me... (I wear bath and Body works...sweet pea) I literally have to prove this to family and friends b/c they don’t believe my snake recognizes my scent.

Also people say that feeding in a separate enclosure isn’t needed... I say it depends on the snake. I have a female that is 7 feet. She is extremely enclosure aggressive. Once I get her out she is fine... but going in her enclosure to pick her up is a no no. Have you tried to hook train your snake? Some people say hooks are for whimps... I say hooks are for serious... smart... snake handlers. I have hooks ranging in sizes. I even use them to pick up my small corn snake morphs. Trust me it is well worth the expense... besides.. my hubby is like a jack of all trades kinda guy... he made everyone I have.

So... lets start over... tell Ron and I everything... we’ll see if we can help you figure this out.

~smiles~

I know what you mean about this, i have an adult female cornsnake, and she does the same exact thing when you touch her. a friend of mine’s does this also, but i just told her to reach in and pick it up, no matter how much you want to pull away because of the face or the movements.

when i picked up my cornsnake, she did the same thing, turning around real fast and flying her head right up to ur hand like she’s hungry or pissed, but she lost interest when i lifted her up. it all really depends on the snake though. sometimes i have to put a glove that smells like i do in a few of my reptile’s tanks and pet them with it to find out how they’d react to the touch and smell.

oh, and to Gueedo, you make a lot of good points in what you’d said previously, but i will tell you that reptiles, along with many other animals CAN pick up on y our energy. maybe not as well as dogs for obvious reasons as dogs need the sense to pick out pack leaders and such, but i’ve observed a few circumstances in which my bearded dragon, Spike, will puff and open his mouth wide and turn at you like he’s ready to bite, and the only time he’s done this is when somebody is feeling a bit of fear. i’m saying this respectfully of your opinion, and this is my opinion. i don’t want to fight, i just am stating my opinion over this.

i’m not fighting, i like to talk about that stuff.

I have a degree in Bio engineering.

Energy is stuff for wizard. SCIENCE is a better proof to study animals, C. Darwin told us a lot.... So please let’s keep away from people stuff like "my snake can feel if i’m happy or sad" this is "wonderworld" let’s stay on Earth and help people with problems.

By the way, another advice; don’t use hook with snakes, it’s not smart at all. Smart people use the brain, not the hook. (this is referred to who said that is good to use hooks with snakes)

see ya

Okay my snake completly turned on me.

Are her temps and humidity correct?
Are you provideing a hide(or two)?
Is her tank in a high traffic area?

Also a year and a half and only eating one mouse a week doesn’t sound right. Does the mouse leave a small lump after feeding? If not she is probably very hungry. Either up her feeding to every 5 days or move up in prey(this would be the better option). The prey needs to be about the same size or just larger then the largest part of the snake.

I think everyone reads into these posts to much, plain and simple you are handling a wild animal and yet it sucks to get bitten but it will happen if you own reptiles. Don’t be afraid just reach in there like you use to do, the hardest part is you are afraid of your snake. The shirt trick works great I have done that many times and it always seems to work. I hope all works out well for you, you could try to hook train as well. Good luck

Okay my snake completly turned on me.

To begin i just want to say WILD animals can’t turn on you because they were wild before you aquired it and it will wild even after it dies.

what you should do is throw something in there over the the snakes whole body and cover it.

Make sure you gently grip your snake by the snake so you can control of the head.

Take the snake all the way out of the tank and handle it.

Every day it should be handled more and more then on a regular basis.

Snakes usually act 100% differently outside of their homes,

Has the snake ever bitten you AFTER you have it out of its enclosure?

How does it act outside of the enclosure?

Also BEFORE you brought this snake did you know what you were getting your self into?

How big is the snake do you have any pictures?

Also the key to not getting bit is to let the snake bite you when you go to handle it.

Yes let it bite you, because the more you show the snake that bites dont scare you off it will stop using this as a scare tatic.

Use gloves and long sleeve shirt if need be.

Okay my snake completly turned on me.

I’m sorry, but the key to not getting bit is to know how to read your animal’s body language, and know when it just doesn’t want to be handled. Letting it bite you isn’t going to stop anything. Like you said, it’s a wild animal, and biting is always going to be a defensive reaction. You’re not going to teach a wild animal that biting isn’t going to work, it’s in their nature, it’s their only defense.
I agree that snakes can be cage aggressive and act much calmer outside of their cage, that’s what hook training is for. I’ve never heard of throwing something over the snake in order to get it out. I can only see that leading to more stress and an even more agitated and aggressive boa.
Get a hook and use it to guide the snake out of it’s cage. If it’s a large boa never use the hook to pick the snake up because it will break ribs. I just use my hook to steer the boa’s head away from me, then I pick it up slowly and take it out of it’s cage, and I’ve never been bitten by any of my boas, including a 6 foot male who hates everything and will try to bite every time I open the cage.

Okay my snake completly turned on me.

knowing its body language wont help prevent a bite because it can be really calm one minute and just bite for no reason.

knowin the body langauge will only help when you are about to pick it up or do cleaning around it.

how would throwing something over its head make it more stressed?

thats exactly what the croc hunter used to do to alligators to relieve their stress when being transported and they were also reptiles so i dont understand why it wouldnt work with snakes.
